The Sunstone is a rare gem you can find only in the desert sands, on the surface or as deep as the sandstone layer. It is roughly the size of a flower, and starts as a Gold Ore-looking block, only instead of little streaks, it's patches of yellow with a bit of red thrown in.
To retrieve this valuable rock, you must use at least an Iron pick, and after several seconds of mining, you are rewarded with a gem that looks like a yellow sunburst. It has no crafting nor building use, but when you take it out, you can right click to make it burst with a brilliant light, casting light around you, which you can carry around. It is as bright as the sun itself but fades in the darkness (meaning, it casts a light level of 15 like Glowstone) and lasts for a minute, casting light for as long as you hold it out. It is quite a bit more powerful than other sources or light, in fact, the Sunstone is strong enough to burn the creatures of the night.
Be warned though, the Sunstone can burn out. You get twelve uses of it before it becomes a Dulled Sunstone. A Dulled Sunstone only provides half as much light, and no longer burns the undead, but it lasts longer, you can use it 18 times before it becomes a Dead Sunstone, which no longer shines at all.
However, one who has the proper materials may recharge their Sunstones! If one has the Brewing Stand, one may place up to three Dull or Dead Sunstones and recharge them with Glowstone Dust. A Dull Sunstone becomes a normal Sunstone, a Dead Sunstone becomes a Dull one.
TL;DR version
-A new gem that spawns in the desert.
-You can mine it and use it up to 12 times, which you can use while carrying with you, provides light level 15, it burns mobs.
-After 12 uses, it becomes a Dull Sunstone, which you can use up to 18 times, provides light level 8, no longer burns mobs. After those, it's Dead.
-You can recharge them at Brewing Stands with Glowstone Dust to go from Dead > Dull or Dull> Normal.
No, it's not a glowstone. It's a little bit closer to a flashlight. You hold out the gem and right click, and it lights up in your hand. You can then carry it around for a while, it provides as much light as a glowstone, and causes enemy mobs to be set on fire if they come close enough.
It's not something you just place down and tap to activate.
I believe in there you said you can carry it around when you have used it as a mobile light source, that would require Dynamic Lighting, which Mojang I believe has tried to implement without causing too much lag. If they had succeeded then we would probably already have torches you carry around providing light. So the only useful thing is the lighting mobs on fire which if you are at least half-skilled at running from mobs you can easily do with flint and steel. So this would be a no unless you could somehow use it as an ingredient for some potion.
You could at least give some constructive criticism like minecrafter76767 did, in pointing out that dynamic lighting has been thought of at Mojang.
As far as minecrafter76767's post itself: I think it would work fine if it used the somewhatugly but entirely usable method of treating it the same is your head being a light source the same as a torch or something, and it would just go out from there and change when you moved into a different block.
As for burning mobs with flint and steel, yes, you can do that, but it doesn't also have the extra use of providing an easy to carry light source. The thing that I would greatly enjoy this for would be if I was doing exploratory mining, where I'm just making lots of 1x2 tunnels where I don't want to waste torches.
hmmmm it sounds too easy to recharge (glowstone dust is pretty easy to get if you dont count the portal) how about this instead?
sunstone - crafted from 4 glowstone, 4 blaze rods and 1 eye of ender - can burn mobs (unlike other light sources which only prevent mob spawns) - has 10 times the light casting distance of glowstone - doesnt drop anything if broken.
this makes it hard to get but also very valuable (combat retreat point from mobs and also a very big lighted area from a single stone) also i made it so that it isnt moveable so it cant be dragged around and used for quick mob kills (you gotta run for that)
hope ya liked my recommendation better. by the way your original idea is good but it just seems too overpowered.

I think an alternative could be for it to be thrown up into the air like an Eye of Ender; while up there and immobile it will illuminate the surrounding area and burn mobs. After whatever time it would fall back down to Earth with 1 use depleted.
If I helped in any way, don't click that little green +, instead tell me how much you liked the post. (Only those who are incapable of earning rep the hard way have to beg for it in their signatures).

That does seem to be a pretty good idea, would it be able to be picked up again after it fell to the ground? Or would it automatically return to its users hand?
I kind of like this idea, but you might change the name. Sunstones are real, and they are in deserts, but they dont glow.
Diamonds are real, and you cannot make armor or tools out of it because they will fall apart and you would not be able to move, and keep cutting yourself in the armor. Minecraft is not real life.

I intentionally picked the name Sunstone because they are real gems that grow in the desert, and they name implies something that is bright like the sun.

Picked up again, just like an Eye of Ender.

I really like this idea, and I would kind of like to be able to stick this thing on the end of an arrow, go all zelda light arrows on an enderman or something
Like the candlelight spell on skyrim? cool! I like it, but I think it shouldn't be able to be replenished because that would make the idea of other availible sunstone gems pointless.\
-Edit-
Ohhhhh cool idea. It prevents endermen from teleporting or it turns them neutral again. Or maybe it pacifys pigmen!
I like the idea of something that can be used to cast enough light that aggressive mobs actually catch fire. I think either making it unmovable, like glass, or a usable item, like an eye of ender that can break and disappear, would make it reasonable, especially if it was made as rare as diamonds to find.
I think holdable torches would be a better, and more useful addition to the game, to address this characteristic.
Your initial post is well thought out, and addresses an issue that some people may find while playing Minecraft, for that, you recieve rep regardless. :biggrin.gif:

Not sure if it still works. But you can use Ladders as sort of a way to get up higher places. - - Quoted from a post by Unit7
