I know anyone who has played terraria and MC wants to see this, or anyone who has seen the TorchLight plugin. One of my plugin devs recently fixed that up for 1.1, and with the bugs it has, that drove me to think: Jeb_ needs to make torches emit light when held. Not just when placed, that'd be brilliant.
I'm fairly certain that this has been thought up before, but has died down because Notch is a lazy bum. (I ain't hatin' :tongue.gif: I like Notch, but he was a bit lazy compared to Jeb_) We have Jeb_ now though, who is doing wonders for the game (you keep it up dude<3) could very well implement this with enough support.
Whether the torches have a limited lifespan while held (like durability damage taken over time while held), or just permanant, I don't care. I just want to see this implemented. This would rock any future adventure updates, or any RPG servers out there that don't want to let players build. They can just carry a torch through the place, instead of being left in the dark!

Iirc, Notch (not Jeb) said that this would be like putting Portal Devices in Gmod; Nether to program, and would cause a shiton of lag, so no support.
Btw, I love Terraria, although I tried killing the wall of flesh and was kileld. BY A ****ING LEECH.... And I even had all of his Hungry defeated....
The plugin itself causes very little lag. Would it not be easier (and more performance friendly) when added into the actual game, and not made a plugin?
I will have to see if the mods lag at all now, hm..
EDIT: The mod linked does not seem to be generating ANY lag... I call BS :3 (It may for multi, however. I am unsure. Either way, I want to see this at least attempted)

This is impossible because it causes insane lag. As much as if you were in the Far Lands, but everywhere. That lag is because, with mobile lights, there is a chunk update. So, not possible without making the game unplayable.

Are you talking for single or multi? Because I just tested out the bloody mod for it and it generated no lag. I'd like to see this even if it was just for single, and NOT have to install a mod for it.
Edit: Or maybe Jeb_ should do what Notch said he'd get around to a year and a half ago- optimizing the lighting engine. I see no lag on my part, but I am running a badass processor with good RAM.

I think he means in a Multiplayer environment, in which case lag is possible even with native code. Light constantly updating all around the server = trouble, ESPECIALLY if all those derps gather in a single chunk. This is particularly true with TorchLight (most I've tested it with was 2 ppl).
Technically speaking, there's nothing wrong with the light engine. Sure, lighting tends to bleed (which is a pain in the ass for TorchLight), but it's not a bug, per se.
