I haven't been active for a while, but last time I was this was a fairly popular topic. Nobody ever discussed it further than this though.
Armor Stand
My idea was to have a craftable item, that would be crafted with three planks along the bottom, and from there, two sticks above, as shown in Image 1. This new item, called an "Armor Stand" would act similarly to doors, in that they cannot be placed on walls, only on ground, and that they are two blocks high. It also acts similarly to signs with the factor that they can only be edited when placed. When they are placed, they open a menu like the one where you put your armor on in through the inventory, as shown in Image 2 and Image 3. The same items go into the same slots here (helmet on top, boots on bottom, etc.). You cannot place enchanted armor on an armor stand. When you exit this menu, the armor stand is there, with all the armor you put onto it for show. The stand has a very short 'mine' time, though it's not instant. This is to prevent it from breaking on accident. When broken, all of the armor placed onto the stand is dropped as an item would be when the chest it is in is destroyed. The armor is in the condition you placed it on the stand in.
Weapon Rack
The weapon rack is a similar idea, though instead of hanging armor, as you may have guessed, it's for hanging weapons. The weapon rack is crafted with three planks along the bottom again, and two sticks on the left and right sides. This can be seen in Image 4. It can only be placed on the wall, not on the floor. Any tool that will wear down, or break can be placed on a weapon rack, except shears (Swords, Pickaxe, Axe, Shovel, Hoe, Fishing Rod, Bow). The weapon rack is similar to pistons because the direction you place it from changes the outcome. Whichever direction you are facing when it's placed is the direction the head/point of the tool will be pointing. With the case of the bow, it's the direction the point of the arrow would be when it's about to be fired. This rule applies for the four direction, left, right, up, and down. Because it cannot be placed on the floor, it cannot go forward or backward. Like the armor stand, when placed it opens a menu, with just one square/tile to place things in. This tile can hold any of the previously mentioned objects, and nothing else.

Armor Stands already exist. I believe those are one of Risugami's Mods.
The OP wants armor stands in the actual game, he isn't making a suggestion for a mod. That's what the Mods Suggestion section is for. This section is for suggestions to the vanilla game. Mods aren't vanilla.
On topic: There should be a rack that can hold any type of item, be it a "weapon," block, food item, etc so people could display their diamond blocks or what-not.
If I helped in any way, don't click that little green +, instead tell me how much you liked the post. (Only those who are incapable of earning rep the hard way have to beg for it in their signatures).
But I don't think these should be first priority, though it would help some for aesthetics..
I agree that it shouldn't be a major priority, though I would still like to see it implemented.

Or hire a guy on multiplayer to stand there with an armor rack skin! He could watch TV, and you could have an armor rack.
Edit: Darn, you beat me to it. Anyway, the rest of my post still stands.
