Personally, the idea of hunting around for obsidian, just to make a Nether gate, seems like a severe waste, especially after you have made a Nether gate, it has no use other than to be decorative, and even then, not by much.
I personally think, maybe Obsidian should be able to be broken, like Gold Bars can be into 9 little chunks, in addition to being able to make Arrows with Flint, maybe you could make slightly more powerful arrows with Obsidian.
It would not hurt to allow Obsidian to be able to be crafted into Half blocks, Stairs, and the like, just as with Stone, maybe even like the Nether Stone, make Obsidian Fences.
Also, making Obsidian into Tools could be very nice, maybe make them last nearly as long as Diamond tools in Endurance, but only mine a little faster than Steel tools. As Far as Armor, i am just not sure, maybe some middle ground between Diamond and Steel.

Lies. It is virtually impossible to destroy with explosives. You would need to have approximately 285 or so TNT-power explosions all focused onto a single block area to destroy just a single block of obsidian.
EDIT: And it takes longer to break than any other block (excluding bedrock, but you get the point).

Yes... Enchanting tables, totally forgot bout those. Although, even with those taken into account and its... blast resistance capabilities... there is not much else.

Let's make a list of obsidian's current uses:
1. Really really high explosion resistance.
2. Takes a while to mine.
3. Nether Portals.
4. Enchanting tables.
5. For people who like how it looks.
Come again?
EDIT: Oh, and I forgot to mention that obsidian half blocks and stairs would be certainly welcome. We really need more of those. Fences seem strange though, how about a miniature "wall" that acts the same as a fence but is a solid mass? It would of course be thinner than a full block (like just less than half a block thick, placed in the middle of a block?)

the Solid wall would simply be a block... unless you mean more like the Iron Fences, thin, but still protective. I could see a very nice use in that, especially if you could turn 6 Obsidian blocks into 16 Obsidian walls, just like Iron Fences.

The appearance I had in mind would be something like so (but made out of obsidian of course):
It would act the exact same as a normal fence, but of course have near-immunity to explosions and would take longer to mine. Having thin, dinky little fences out of obsidian would seem strange to me. So walls FTW.

so tell me, what of the Arrow idea? if you wanted to, you could even go and make an 'obsidian apple' (no clue what it would do, just a weird idea to throw out there). Although i think we need a new thing for Feathers... Arrows are not plentiful enough in my view... unless you make a skele grinder.

maybe only the same strength

nope. considering it's easier to come by than iron and one diamond pick would mine heaps of it, that would make this way to OP

Improving Minecraft, one suggestion at a time.
I scored 82% on the Minecraft Trivia Quiz. How much do you know about Minecraft?

Why does everyone think I don't have an avatar? Is there anyone who can see the one black pixel.
