I have had some new ideas about how the NPC villager mechanics work. We all know of these quirky characters: They mill around the NPC villages, doing nothing except sometimes getting in the way. I think that the mechanics could be given more realism, starting with something that my adventure/RPG-minded counterparts may enjoy: NPC quests.
EXAMPLE TIME!!
Let's say you find an NPC village. The local priest seems worried. You walk over and talk to him. "The village is terrorized by the undead each night.", he says. "If you can defeat 8 zombies and 4 skeletons, the villagers will repay you."
So, at night, you stand guard in the fields, and defeat the 8 zombies and 4 skeletons, as well as a few creepers for personal gain. The next day, you speak to the priest again. "Thank you for your service! In return, the townspeople have decided to award you 5 iron ingots and 1 gold ingot. You are welcome to stay here anytime you wish, traveler."
The main rewards of the quests would be gold and iron ingots, and in some rare cases, diamonds. Other prizes could include minerals (coal, lapis lazuli, and redstone), food (bread, meat), or raw materials (wood, sticks, bricks, cobble, etc.).
Also, if possible, the code could be written so that NPC quests vary according to the location and state of the NPC village. If the village is surrounded by dense forest, for example, a quest could be to chop down all the trees in the general area.

It would be cool if they had rep so to say. when you start they are neutral... they wont kill you, or sell you anything... just offer you quests.
as you continue completing quests for them there rep goes up till eventually they idolize you, sell you stuff at discounts, and will be aggressive to anything that harms you.
vice versa, the more you kill them, the lower there rep will be until eventually they will despise you so much you can no longer quest for them, and they will attempt to kill you on sight.
Sorry that I made that mistake because I am quite new in minecraftforum.net and I just put out comments like 3 days ago. Forgive me for what I did and just say peace.

I guess...But it just makes minecraft feel like you do relativity boring quests, to get rewards.
I do think villagers need more interactive capabilities, but I don't think having them give you "go kill X amount of something, and I'll give you some iron and gold in return." type of quests.

i completely agree with you, it'll make minecraft like one of those crap online RPG's. This is my opinion talking, but i don't want minecraft to become an RPG. I think the npcs should be for trading with, making friends, just for making singleplayer be less lonely :sad.gif:
