Here's an idea for a fun and useful new type of magic: levitation. Levitation would be used to pick up and move mobs.
Levitation would require a wand, which would crafted out of a blaze rod and a diamond.
Left clicking with your wand would allow you to make one mob at a time hover. It would work at a pretty decent range, and the mob would follow your cursor while you hold down the left mouse button. You could pick the mob up and drop it back down anywhere. As you move the mob would maintain its distance from you, unless it's blocked by an obstacle. You could also sneak in order to get closer or further to the mob you're levitating without making it move.
So you could lift up farm animals and drop them inside a fence. Or fling a zombie off a cliff. Or chase after your friend with a creeper.
This is obviously quite useful, but there there are two big catches:
1) Levitation drains your xp quickly. When you run out of xp any creature you're holding falls.
2) You cannot do anything else but move while you're levitating something.
I think this would have a variety of great uses in capturing/sorting farm animals, and defending yourself from enemy mobs, and lots of other things too. But the fact that it requires xp would mean that usually you'd just use it in short bursts.
Hmmm. Not a bad idea actually. I was expecting some unbalanced idea about magic but this is actually quite balanced. I'd like to see this implemented but with a change. You have to enchant the wand with a level 25 enchantment to be able to use it. Otherwise it's useless.

That would be better. Perhaps the wand needed a 5 second "cool down" time every time it's used before it can be used again. I'm not really sure though.

I like this. I feel like it would be having "the force". Imagine how this would be used in SMP PVP.
I recommend you add the ability to push/ pull mobs/ people too. So pull them or throw them away.
Perhaps it should have a few seconds "warm up time", and if you are hit, you automatically drop what you are holding.
Here to "pull" a mob you'd first levitate it, then just walk backwards. It'll float to maintain the same distance between you.
If you want to be closer/further to the mob, without letting go of it, you could just sneak. While you sneak the mob wouldn't match your movement.
I think it might be a little too powerful if it also worked on players. Maybe it should only work on players that are also holding a wand, to allow wizards duels or cooperative traveling (hoisting each other over obstacles), so you can use it on other players without newbies being cruelly floated all over the place.
And yeah, you should drop what you're holding if you take damage.
Also, before anyone asks. No, it wouldn't work on the Enderdragon.
It would work on Endermen, but they can teleport out of it. And lifting a hostile mob counts as an attack, so it'd teleport and attack you.
Ghasts could be moved too, but the range of the wand is much less than the range of the ghast's fireball, so if you can move it then it can also attack you. The same applies to moving skeletons.

Either that, or wands could have durability.
