So I've been thinking lately, "Why don't they have more uses for obsidian?" It's really only good for portals and blast shields. It's not an effective building material, because it takes too long to break. I thought of some ways to use it.
First off, real life obsidian is basically volcanic glass. It is VERY VERY sharp.
The first thing you can craft is obsidian shards. These are crafted shapeless with 1 obsidian and 1 flint. This would yield one obsidian shard.
Then you craft obsidian fiber:
= 8 obsidian fiber
Obsidian = obsidian shards
Feather = string
Next, you craft reinforced shafts. They are crafted like so:
= 16 reinforced shafts shafts
Obsidian = obsidian fiber
Obsidian tools: They crafted wherever sticks are, you put shafts. Wherever the wood/stone/iron/gold/diamond is you put shards. All the tools are slightly less durable than diamond unless stated otherwise, and have higher enchant-ability. They can mine obsidian very fast, but it drops 2 obsidian shards as opposed to a block.
Next is the obsidian pick.
It is slightly less durable than diamond, and it mines slower, but it has a few special abilities. It can get smoothstone instead of cobble, and has fortune II built in, but not in enchantment form. It also has slightly more enchantment potential than diamond.
Obsidian sword:
The obsidian sword has the ability to 1-hit mobs. The catch is, once you hit them, it does the damage of a stone sword, but the rest of their health "bleeds out" over the next 5 seconds (15 seconds for enders, and it does normal diamond sword damage on the dragon.) So you won't be able to get that creeper before it explodes, but zombies, skeletons, and enders are easier, but still have enough time to kill you.
Obsidian hoe:
The obsidian hoe is a cool one. It works like a normal hoe, except when you break wheat with it, it doesn't completely destroy it, it just gives you the wheat, and takes it back to level one. It has a slightly less chance of dropping a seed.
Obsidian shovel:
The obsidian shovel is very fast compared to diamond, almost instantaneous. The disadvantage is that it has a slight chance of either not giving you a drop, or the block will not mine the first time.
Next is obsidian archery:
Obsidian arrows:
Crafted like arrows, but replace the sticks with rods, and the flint with shards. Yields 8 obsidian arrows.
When shot from a normal bow, they are completely accurate left and right, but the drop is much more severe. They do 1 heart of damage, plus 2 hearts of bleeding damage.
When shot from a compound bow, shown below, they fly very fast with almost no drop, and they do 2 hearts of hit damage and 3 hearts of bleeding.
Compound bow:
The compound bow is crafted like a normal bow, but replace sticks with rods, and string with obsidian fiber.
The compound bow can't shoot normal arrows (too weak) but is VERY effective with obsidian arrows (above)
The C Bow zooms to level 3 very fast, but there is an additional level 4, which takes about 3 seconds to get to. This zooms in a lot more than 3, and puts big crosshairs on you screen. It allows for a slightly more accurate shot than 3.
The compound bow has 3x the durability of a normal bow, and 1.5x the enchantability.
In fact, it has also been suggested that obsidian be made more realistic and shard-y.
By the way, no amount of volcanic glass can resist 12 metres3 of TNT, like obsidian can.
I will say no to this one.
I know real life obsidian is weak, but that's why your reinforce it with the fancy rods and such. They should make obsidian not so blast resistant, and make a different blast resistant material.
