Dropped items count as "entities". They all have a tiny amount of health. If an item hits a cactus, it actually disappears.
The dropped items should have different health levels based on what item they actually are. Dropped obsidian should be stronger than dropped wood. It could be based on blast resistance I guess. Also, only flammable blocks should die in fire as dropped items.
But then not all of them disappear after five minutes; some will be less and some will be more. Theoretically, when you do find where you died and recover them, all your gold and diamonds could be gone and you'd be stuck with a bunch of cobblestone or another item with a lot of health. Besides, even if they had different health levels, if you dropped one against a cactus when you died, it would still continuously lose health and disappear, the only difference being that it'd last a few seconds longer.

In some mob traps, mobs die on cacti. The items flow down the stream, but they die if they touch a cactus just once. Plus, what if you accidentally let a diamond fall onto a cactus? It's instantly gone.
As far as i know, there is no known reason for this effect multiplayer in terms of lag.
Also, I think obsidian already has a slightly larger resistance to fire than
other dropped items, though I am not quite sure.
Either way, I would not notice this effect much, other than dying and having to find the stop you died in.

Don't build the mob trap with cacti then, build a water funnel to drown the mobs, or make a fall-damage grinder.
Also, don't be an idiot and press "Q" while holding a diamond over cacti. I kind of thought that was common sense.

This is an unacceptable excuse for a programmer. All programs must be foolproof. If you make a calendar program and have alarms, you can't just hope that a user doesn't set an alarm before the current date.
I just thought of the main annoyances with cacti. If you crash a minecart into a cactus then remove the cart (I've done it 4 times) or do some kind of farming near cacti, the items you drop die. Big waste of iron, wheat, seeds, and cacti.
Cacti are easily moved, there is no reason to change them. You dont need to use cacti to grind mobs or mine. You can easily make a drowning trap, lava and ladder trap, or fall trap.
