The desert needs a weather variant, like snow and rain - so why not sandstorms?
Sandstorms could come from the north, east, west or south.
Sandstorms would have effects; lower visible range, brown fog, screen distortions and of course a lot of orange particles coming from a direction.
The player can of course, avoid sandstorms with basic shelter.
A simple sandstorm shelter could be a small trench or your already finished home.
There are a new kind of mob that spawn during sandstorms - the deadly Sandworm.
The sandworms can dig through sand similar to the Enderdragon, but it doesn't fly (duh).
Sandworms can only go through sand, so they're not extremely overpowered.
Sandworms vary in size, small, medium, big or huge.
Sandworms have a orange-brown color, much like the sand, but they're not invisible.
If the sandworm is small, it got low health but if it's huge - it can have 15-20 hearts.
Sandworms are not common during sandstorms, because of their varying sizes, health, and damage.
Note: Sandworms pass through the sand, not destroy it, to prevent the landscape from being completely destroyed.
Since the desert is now full of a new hostile creature and "weather" type, don't you think you need some gear to help you survive?
There are 2 new kinds of headgear I could think of (may be updated soon).
*Desert Googles (reduces sandstorm effects)
*Sandworm Head (exactly what it is, wear a sandworm's head like the pumpkin).
New item(s)/tool(s)
*Sandworm Body (used as a sack/bag, can store items with the size of half a small chest)
I'd say yes to the sandstorm, but no to the mobs and items. The sandworms would mass up the landscape.
The sandworms pass through the sand, they don't destroy blocks, so they won't "mass up" the landscape.
They were also said to not be common enemies, because they vary in size, damage and health.
If I may add my input, what about the sand storm causing a layer of sand to appear on everything, much like snow does? Can't say I like the mobs or items, though perhaps small sandworms would be cool, but otherwise I love this. Also, what about a passive desert mob, like camels for example? Or perhaps something like a jackrabbit or a roadrunner?

Allright, then it's a very good idea! :biggrin.gif:

Why don't you like the items?
The sandworms got to drop something, and the players would need something to help them in sandstorms.
