They are the "MMPH" to survival, that once found -aren't much better after all. Yeah, they have crazy endurance, but their actual speed is nearly the same to that of irons.
I think a buff is in order.
Diamonds are so rare..They should be extremely fast to begin with. I say they make diamond tools faster, otherwise it's a little bit of a waste of time to find diamond, when I can just make 5 iron picks with the 3,000,000 stacks of iron I have..
And before you bash this idea, think about it. Diamonds are so incredibly rare, that once found should (in my opinion) be as quick as lightning! (not literally)..
This would really get me to go diamond mining more often, and perhaps many, many more.

Diamonds aren't that rare, actually. They have around a 1 in 1000 chance (probably equal to coal) to be found; the point is that diamond is found in a very specific belt below 32.
Also, diamond's usefulness is already seen in mining obsidian should nothing else do.
Iron's durability is ~530, diamond is 1560ish... This means that it takes nearly 3 iron tools to equal the comparable diamond tool, weighing down the inventory 3x as much.
If I had a diamond shovel and 2 diamond picks, I can excavate entire vast areas of a tunnel system without a problem.
If I had iron, I would have to carry 3 shovels and 6 diamond picks; this makes these tools much more inconvenient to carry, and reduces your inventory 200% faster than the diamond counterparts.
Its because of the quality of convenience and space efficiency that I say that diamonds are already well-balanced.

Iron is 251. If iron tools had 530 uses, I might actually use them for more than mining my first 3 diamond ores...

Ah thank you... You only strengthen my point.
@OP, my bad.
Iron's durability is ~530 251, diamond is 1560ish... This means that it takes nearly 3 6 iron tools to equal the comparable diamond tool, weighing down the inventory 3x 6x as much.

Iron is vastly more common though - and it's not like you have to carry all the possible tools in advance, a stack of ingots and a stack of wood will give you all the tools you need. Personally, I carry a single diamond pick for backup (and obsidian), but use iron picks for the bulk of my mining.
All I'm saying is..Maybe diamond should be faster. I mean, the durability is pretty insane, yet the speed lacks something for me.
And inventory space should never be a problem. 36 slots, say we used iron tools which are a hell of a lot easier to make, it would only take up roughly 1/6-2/6 the inventory, and since other blocks stack up to 64, I don't see the big difference here.
Since both diamonds and iron are practically infinite once you have a decent mining operation, the main advantage of diamond I think is the convenience of not having to craft a new tool as often. The speed advantage of diamond seems right the way it is.
I don't want diamonds to be better. I just wish they were easier to find. Ever since their maximum height was dropped by four blocks, they have become VERY hard to find in caves. Just this week, I made an epic cave run and came out with 63 solid iron blocks. That's 567 iron plus numerous iron picks that were crafted and exhausted down there. In that time, I found thirteen diamonds. Actually looking at the numbers indicates that spelunking with diamond tools is probably sustainable, but I very much preferred it when you could go down there with diamond tools and reliably come back with more than you used.

By the way, the term you're looking for is, "OOMPH."
