I couldn't find where someone had suggested this, specifically, but that doesn't mean it isn't out there—if so, I apologize for being redundant. I am aware that similar things have been suggested.
In an effort to have biome "proximity" become more sensible, I am suggesting that biomes be grouped together by "temperature" and generated in repeating "bands," from North to South (or whichever direction is actually appropriate). For simplified example (using existing biomes):
Cold (Taiga, Tundra, etc.)
Temperate (Forest, Grassland, Swamp, etc.)
Hot (Jungle, Desert, etc.)
Temperate (Forest, Grassland, etc.)
Cold (Taiga, Tundra, etc.)
Repeated…
Points:
If you don't like your current climate, you know you can walk "that direction" and eventually it will change to what you're looking for
Width of the "bands" could be as narrow or wide as is appropriate; if more world-customization settings are introduced, the width of bands should be customizeable as well
Some biomes will probably appear in multiple bands—Desert, for example—but should probably differ a bit between them
To avoid making the generated world a "globe" and/or setting a specific North or South "Pole" region, my suggestion is that the bands repeat indefinitely—ideally, they will be wide enough that you won't get too much repetition in a typical game situation
It is feasible that the bands could repeat in both axes, North/South and East/West, in a sort of "checkerboard" pattern—might be useful, but not my preference, at the moment
If "temperature" were ever to be implemented, it would be tied to the climate band, rather than to the biomes themselves
As biomes are expanded or added, more band/steps might become appropriate
I like this idea, try to contact Jeb with this idea if you can. In Minecraft right now it doesn't make sense how a desert can be bordered to a tundra. I think this idea would make Minecraft seem more realistic.
Realism isn't all that matter :tongue.gif:
Anyways, like the idea and would make it a hell of a lot more convenient trying to find a place to set up camp.
I agree we need to have climate bands but I don't like the NS or checker board ideas because the world is just to large and there is no equator. It would just keep repeating in a predictable pattern. Walk north and it would get cold, then warm, hot, cool off again. With an endless map you cannot just have it get cold and stay cold like a real planet.
The climate bands would keep things like deserts from being right next to snow or rain forests.
There would have to be two types of bands, temperature and humidity. Those are what determine what biome is what.

All I can think of, for now.PS: deserts are cold at night, so they aren't just hot.

Adding temperature would be awesome btw.
