(I searched the forum and found topics SUGGESTING fruit trees, but never found my exact suggestion, and felt it was different enough to warrant a topic.)
Oak trees now have a random chance of dropping apples. It's a low chance, but since it's a chance per leaf, you usually get at least 2 apples per 3 trees, in my experience. Low chance, but high efficiency.
Now, this is fine. It makes apples (which aren't terribly special in their own right, save for the purpose of making golden apples,) easier to obtain. I like this change.
However, rather than make oak trees drop them, I would much rather see apples get a tree type of their own.
The way I see it; apples could be crafted (much like pumpkins to get pumpkin seeds, and melon slices to get melon seeds,) to obtain apple seeds. When planted on dirt, apple seeds (which would basically be an apple sapling,) would grow an apple tree.
The texture would be a lighter coloured version of the normal wood log texture, similar to how pine is a darkened version of oak.
Once apple trees exist, I feel that oak should no longer drop apples.
Instead, I suggest a new biome type be put in. It would be small in size, and roughly the size of a village biome. It wouldn't be incredibly common, nor extremely rare... perhaps about the same rarity as a village biome as well, and if possible, would be more prone to being placed near forest and plains biome types. This way, while they're not INCREDIBLY common, and you would have to search a fair bit, anyone could eventually find one.
Chopping apple trees would give you apple logs, just like chopping any other tree gives you logs of that type. Logs could be crafted into wood normally, like any other log type. Leaves, rather than dropping saplings, would have the same sapling drop chance replaced with apples. (Which, as stated before, would be crafted into seeds to grow said trees.)
Grass tinting for orchard biomes would be a "warmer" version of the tinting for plains; more of a warm, vibrant golden green.

It's a good suggestion, and thought-out unlike many other suggestions i've seen here.
However I like it the way it is. The oak trees are common enough that you'll always have access to them unless you're isolating yourself. The chance is low enough that you don't get too many apples.
I made a post on another thread about fruit trees, that basically said apples would be crafted into seeds and planted on farmland. The tree would grow in stages much like wheat or melon/pumpkin stems, and when fully grown would be comprised of a trunk made of oak wood, and special leaves that have a much higher chance than 0.5% of dropping apples.
Could even...just make Fruit trees spawn as part of the NPC village's farms. This would make them a bit rare
I'd like to see apple trees grow from apple seeds and have little apples on the leafs, maybe if you leave the leaf block on the top of the trunk, the leafs would slowly regenerate back.

Well, if it's going to be trees, I'd like them to be planted just like normal trees. Admitted, I want an excuse to have another log type for building, too~ How it is is fine, and I'm not complaining, I'd just prefer apple trees.

I don't feel apples need to be terribly rare. I've never really felt that, and that's one of the biggest reasons I loved this update.
I'm also quite fond of the golden apple change as well, since I prefer them as an achievable (but useful, while not overly powerful,) item.
I wouldn't mind seeing village farms get their own orchards. It'd add a bit more "oomph" to them, I suppose. I'd still really like to see them get a mini biome of their own, though. C:
I like the solution we have now. If it HAD to be changed, it should just be a new apple tree with the same spawn rate as birch.
Not saying it HAS to be changed, just that it would be nice. Things are fine as they are currently, in all technicality, it's just a change I would quite like to see for the future.
And yes, it WOULD just be a "new apple tree"....seeing as we don't currently have one. Meaning, a new block type for building, a new biome type for world variety, and overall more variety for Minecraft.
Perhaps the biome could have a higher chicken spawn rate, as well? -shrug-
(That said, birch spawns quite frequently, and doesn't really have its own biome, from my understanding? It just spawns in the mix of trees inside forest biomes?)

Oak trees are still just that. :tongue.gif: We technically never received 'apple trees'. Just a random drop.
Also the point of suggestions is generally to ask for 'more'.
