If you place two Nether portals "too close" to each other, they will link incorrectly, and you'll end up with a one way portal. This can be quite annoying. Therefore, I have come up with an idea to fix this. When a Nether portal is created, the portal blocks could look slightly different (this will indicate that the portal's color can be changed). Throwing a wool dye into it will change the color. When you enter the portal for the first time, its color will become permanent and will take on the appearance the portal block currently, only with the coloring. Portals will only link to portals of the same color.
What will this do? It will make it so that Nether portals will be easy. Right now, if you want to link semi-close locations, you have to use MCEdit to have a chance at making the portals link the way you want them to. This doesn't always work, and it's very annoying.
For example, I am unable to link my main base to a somewhat distant megaproject by Nether, because it's supposedly not far enough. The minecart ride takes long enough for me to get bored. The thing is 810 blocks away. It won't let me link it by Nether. Ridiculous. This would fix that.
I saw a thread about someone trying to recreate the chrono trigger world in Minecraft. Nether portals would have made sense for the gates, except they wouldn't work because of portal linking. That's about when I first starting coming up with this idea. I had several ideas on how to make it work, but none of them seemed to be very good, but then I came up with this, which seemed perfectly reasonable and simple.

What do you guys think? Is this a good idea?

If this doesn't become an actual feature, I would love to see a mod for it.
