Give them current towards the next body of water. If a section of the river is generated in the middle of the body of water (this effect can be seen visually in swamps) the river will have no current. This will add dynamics to sailing, and perhaps even add to the installment of Sails to counter the currents.
Rivers should start in Mountains, as well as Tundras and Taigas.
Rivers should be able to split into several other tributaries. This will allow for the creation of Deltas, which will be very fertile land. This is the exact same thing that happened in the Nile.
Rivers should be able to flood up one to three blocks during rainstorms.
Rivers should be able to convert Sand into dirt up to 8 blocks away. This will fix Deserts being so barren and unfarmable without irrigation and foreign dirt. This dirt wouldn't grow green grass though, it will be brown.

1. i like the idea of current in rivers but i also think if they do that it could make alot of peoples games laggier so that should be a choice in the options menu
as for sails i always thought that there should be bigger boats now with the larger oceans boats that are big enough that you can walk around on and place a bed a chest and a crafting table on with a little room to walk around on so you dont have to always push the forward button to cross an ocean.
2. seems like a logical idea but rivers usually just randomly start and then randomly end.
3. gud point there i think that could make things interesting. maybe have crops grow faster on this little chunk of land
4.i agree they should flood but maybe it should depend on how long it rains for so it goes up 1 block for everyday of rain and 1 for every night or maybe 1 for every 2 days and nights or something like that.
5. i dont like this idea too much tho because it would make deserts look worse i mean you see a bunch of sand then all of a sudden this huge dirt area.
also to go along with the idea of deserts i dont think lakes or ponds should spawn allover the desert like they do now it i think they should spawn occasionly but have small trees and grass near them and maybe a few peaceful mobs kinda like an oasis in the desert.
While a really good idea, Notch avoided this for a reason. I think it has something to do with never being able to predict where it should flow to or start because of constantly generating terrain.

Minecraft makes me feel like I'm three. Playing with blocks and afraid of the dark.

you do got a gud point there but im pretty sure that if enough people wanted it that notch and jeb could figure out how to make it work
