I think trains should be added to Minecraft. I have seen mods of trains before but they don't look anywhere near good enough to be implemented.
My original idea was to make the trains only fit on larger tracks. These would be crafted by putting normal tracks in the crafting grid. The engine should not be complicated. Think about how powered carts are crafted. The parts behind the engine would be flat cars that could be coupled by pushing them together and uncoupled by right clicking. The player could build things on top of each flat car, making them wider than 3 blocks wide.
If you went into a tunnel and it wasn't wide enough for the blocks, they would simply pop off.
Alternatively, they could be really simple like the cart from Half Life's On a Rail. But that could suck.
If this becomes popular I will post more pictures.
You can't control minecarts! Powered minecarts are the worst because they always reach the minecart you want to ride in before you do.

Please stop holding shift while walking to your Minecart, thank you.

On topic, I see no reasons why large-scale trains that would have a tendency to lag a lot of computers should be added. Furthermore, they do nothing Minecarts cannot do, and Minecarts look better in a cubed world than trains.
Yes I believe we need a better transportation but I believe instead it should be horses
