TNT is fairly useless, other than as a griefing tool, or in games, or just to make a big explosion for no reason. It really has no place in normal survival gameplay. Why not change that?
I suggest adding a new type of hard metamorphic stone, which would occur randomly a small amount of the time at very deep levels. This hard stone would kind of act like the joker of ores, dropping a random ore, or potentially just cobblestone, when broken. You'd have no way of knowing what you'd get ahead of time.
It would only drop an ore if broken by a diamond pick, or detonated by TNT. Iron, stone, and wood picks would only give you cobblestone. And although a diamond pick is an option, hard stone would take a decent amount of time to break even with diamond, around 10 seconds per block, while an explosion breaks it instantly. So unless you're using an enchanted pick, TNT is definitely faster and more convenient.
This provides an incentive to carry some TNT with you while mining, and use it on the occasional clusters of hardstone you'd find in the depths of the earth.
There needs to be a point to explosions? I was unaware of that fact. Tell me, does there need to be a point in putting a CD in the mircowave as well? Does there also need to be a point to shining a light through a prism to make a rainbow?
All joking aside, there really doesn't need to be an actual point to most explosions. But, if you really, truly need such a point, I'll be happy to list some:
Traps: TNT is really useful in traps, due to both it's ability to drop upon redstone activation and to it's ability to explode.
Cave creation: It is an excellent way to turn a man-made tunnel into a realistic-looking cave. Very useful if you were creating an adventure map involving going underground.
Mining: It's most basic use; a large area of stone and you need to clear it without collecting 2 chests worth of cobble. Blow it up.
General destruction: In all honesty, when was the last time you saw TNT in a video that wasn't blowing up something just for the hell of it? A lot of the time, blowing up stuff is just fun. We've all built a huge tower of multi-colored blocks in real life, for the sole purpose of knocking it down and starting over.
Griefing is another matter, however it is not the block's fault; you can grief with any block. Griefing merely means ruining someone's hard work. I could just as easily grief with dirt blocks as I could with TNT. Just because a few people chose to blow up buildings in order to grief does not mean the sole purpose of TNT is to grief.

There doesn't need to be a point. It would just be nice if there was one.
And sure, there are plenty of uses for TNT. Combat, adventure maps, traps, etc. And yes, it's fun to make things go boom. But there's no reason there can't be a practical use also. And I know you could use it to excavate caves, but considering that it only penetrates a few blocks through stone, you're probably better off just mining rather than collecting sand and killing creepers. Even with a mob harvester giving essentially free unlimited gunpowder, you're probably just breaking even, or losing time, if you use TNT to excavate.

Got to agree here. And giving TNT a defined use won't make all the previous uses disappear.

TNT is fairly useless, other than as a griefing tool, or in games, or just to make a big explosion for no reason. It really has no place in normal survival gameplay. Why not change that? Without TNT in "normal survival gameplay", I couldn't blow through a mountain to make a tunnel. Big explosions CAN have uses.

This hard stone would kind of act like the joker of ores, dropping a random ore, or potentially just cobblestone, when broken. You'd have no way of knowing what you'd get ahead of time. So, basically a "Random ore" ore block... That makes no sense.
So basically, it's an annoying stone that's hard and makes tunneling longer and more stressful, and only drops cobblestone (beacause no one uses diamond picks regularly)?
This provides an incentive to carry some TNT with you while mining, and use it on the occasional clusters of hardstone you'd find in the depths of the earth. Sounds like an incentive to not play one peaceful mode... or play Minecraft at all.

Yes. Yes I do.
Would hardstone have 100% drops when destroyed by TNT? Normally, you wind up losing 60% of your ores when you use explosives.
I like the idea either way, though. What levels would it spawn at? I'd suggest making it lava and below to avoid mangling people's mining operations too much.

I don't know how to deal with this

As it stands right now, getting creepers mine for you is a more effective use of time.
Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.

Yes. Yes I do.
Base:
Cobble: 20%
Coal: 20%
Iron: 20%
Redstone: 10%
Gold: 10%
Lapis: 10%
Diamond: 5%
Emerald: 5%
(You can get more than one kind of drop.)
And the chances increase if that ore is available on that altitude, and the availability of the ore.
As for emerald, only if it is in the extreme hills biome.
Oh and it requires a diamond pick or a TNT to get these drops. Otherwise, end up with cobblestone.
