So since apples drop from trees now, and we got a whole bunch of food recently, it got my gears and stomach moving.
This thread may cause unintentional hunger. Beware...
So pretty much there are a few food items I want to see added:
Garlic
Garlic is dropped by tall grass, similar to seeds. They can't be farmed unless being broken into cloves, which can be planted into the ground and make tall grass with a blueish tint, that when broken, give off garlic. Garlic can be eaten to heal a drumstick, but crafting it with bread makes it garlic bread, which heals five drumsticks. It can also be used in...
Salad
Salad can be made from leaves from trees, and when put into the crafting table with a bowl, they create "Rough Salad". Rough Salad doesn't feed as much as regular salad, only about four drumsticks. Rough salad can't be used to make other salad recipes as well. To get normal salad, lettuce, which can be found in villages, can be used to heal six drumsticks. Combine with garlic, apple, watermelon, pumpkin seeds and...
Bacon!
Bacon can be made from pork chops, creating four raw bacon strips. Raw bacon relives only half a drumstick. When placed in a furnace, they become cooked. Cooked bacon feeds two drumsticks. When a whole stack is eaten, it heals a heart.
Roots
There is no food underground right now, and even if you bring some food, you'll most likely run out. However, if your near the surface, roots may dangle in front of you. They can be broken with your hand, and feed a drumstick. Roots can also be made into sticks by placing three in the the crafting grid.
We really do not need more food in Minecraft. People are going to ignore all the fancy stuff and stick with meat, or bread and melons if they have the seeds. Also, don't make something else (Like a mob) without going into detail.
And why do vampires drop garlic? Vampires are allergic to garlic, they wouldn't be carrying it around.

Did you just glance over this? I explained the vampire, it has it's own paragraph. As well as that, there isn't any food underground, and nobody needs to use these. They are just out there for variety.
I like all the ideas, except for garlic. But I'll get to that in a second.
I feel like rough salad should only heal 4 points of hunger (2 drumsticks or pie pieces or whatever depending on your texture pack). I mean, you're just eating leaves, right? Plus, making lettuce only available in villages seems a bit limiting; if you could get the seeds or cores from the lettuce so that you can farm them yourself that'd be excellent. Another crop grown just like wheat, so that it doesn't seem so isolated in the face of pumpkins and melons.
Roots seem like a decent idea, but not enough to be added in without more than just greasing it up. This goes in hand with bacon; we all want the idea of bacon to be amazing. But in all honesty, if you eat a piece of bacon are you THAT satiated? I know if I was to only eat bacon for breakfast, I'd need the whole rack. Especially if I was punching trees all morning.
Now, down to garlic... Vampires seem like an idea that would fit in well the undead theme. But, it also seems as though they're too vastly different from current mobs. But, then again, so were Endermen. Having vampires drop garlic makes counter-sense. Why would they be carrying their own weakness? It's like Superman carrying around green Kryptonite.

I'll lower some of the food, and have a different way of getting garlic. Roots tend to get pretty common, so walking around a bit and collecting roots can feed quite a bit, so yeah. I think I should remove the grease option for the roots too, since that doesn't make a lot of sense in context. Heck, maybe just get rid of grease altogether. As for bacon, I'll go with what you said.
