Gems would be used to add some more ores to the game. As you know there has not been much of new ores in minecraft sense lapiz in 1.6.
Gems would be used to create necklaces to add abilities to the player like potions. the necklaces would be place in a slot next to the crafting bench in the inventory.
Just like potions they would add abilities to the player but they would last forever till you die and loss it to a player or mob.
Gems would be crafted like a clock but with a gem at the bottom and no redstone in the middle. Or to make colored armor.
Gems would be very hard to find harder to find then iron but as the same as diamond they would spawn in a group 4-1 in a deposit.
The gems would be: Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire, Topaz, Amethyst, and Melanite
Ruby would be used to make a necklas to add more hearts to the player mabey 2-3
Emerald would be used make a necklas to add more exp to ever kill he or she gets
Sapphire would add more speed to swiming like a normal running speed to swiming or something
Topaz, Amethyst and Melanite would make other or better versions of the necklaces
--I like this, except making armor out of it. I think medallions would add a lot to the game.
Instead of wearing a helmet you could wear a medallion to get its benefits. You don't need a water breathing medallion because we have respiration enchant(how many times do I have to say it to you people?).
they should add new ores to vanilla, and you should be able to combine them in a fashion similar to smelting, like copper + iron = bronze (makes better tools and armor)
I would love gems and it would be great to use them as blocks so we would have more colors to use for our buildings in Minecraft. It would be great to have colors in a material that is strong and doesn't burn up.
copper + tin = bronze actually, and if you combined iron and copper then it would be weaker than bronze but have a lower melting point than iron (requires slightly less fuel to smelt if added?) - might be an idea for notch/jeb to add alloys, eg: gold/iron allow has stats in between but 1 iron and 1 gold makes 2 bars of the allow so if you have plenty of each then you could make some of the new stuff with it, or it could be some kind of 'holy' metal, so when you make tools/armour out of it they get a random enchantment.
(just ideas)
other combinations -
netherrack/iron, only for swords - flaming swords
arrows/soul sand - slowing arrows - or - sticks/soul sand - slow sticks, when making tools or arrows out of them the target gets a slowing debuff for a few seconds
i know, but tin has similar texture to iron... trying to be practical
and do not support alloys

If you have a better idea post!
