I like to keep things short and sweet. Basically, Marking Towers are generally agreed upon to be pretty ugly, and if you don't have sand, a bit of a pain in the butt to get rid of... Or maybe you like them, good for you. Suggestion time.
What if you could arrange burnable material horizontally in the shape of a cross, then set the middle block on fire, and instantly create a huge, billowing vertical tower of smoke? Smoke signal fires would burn for a little longer (...one or...maybe two days) than regular burnable material, I guess, just so they're not a complete waste. You know, since Netherrack isn't available for a while.
As an alternative I would suggest a map which you can put markings on. This will not put very much pressure on the server like 80 smoke signals next to each other. Smoke signals can be an easy griefing method, while map marking doesn't change anything to the landscape and has the option to keep your hideout hidden because only you have the map.
Probably worth noting a fire can be put out much easier than a massive tower of dirt.
Can you imagine all those particles lagging down dinosaur computers?
I'm not sure they (the smoke blocks) would hurt any more than floating water sources. I've seen worlds with dozens of floating islands and waterfalls draping down the sides and I haven't experienced any notable slowdown.

You can make a smoke machine with little redstone. I can't explain it in this post (3 dimensional), but yeah...
Still, this is a suggestion, and I have to respect that. +1
Oops, missed your post. I'll look into this. I wouldn't have guessed that it could be done since current smoke seems to just be a particle effect, and tower smoke would be closer to inverted water, but it might provide some neat insight...
Yeah, that's very easy when the server has shutted down because there is too much lag which I had thrice on my server (all on purpose) or the lag is so heavy that you can barely move ;p
Can I ask about your specs?
