I think that the ability to make wires out of gold would be a nice addition to the red-stone dust and could increase/make more efficient the possible machines/devices one could make out of red-stone dust alone.
-Gold wire could be crafted by placing 3 gold bars or nuggets along one horizontal row. Yielding 3 gold wire using nuggets.
-----------------------------------------------
Properties The properties of Gold Wire would be similar but not identical to those of red-stone dust, making it useful in different applications.
-Gold wire WOULD NOT be able to receive power from red-stone torches. It could still receive power from buttons/pressure plates however, as well as a direct connection to powered red-stone dust.
-Gold wire would look like a solid dull gold line on top of the block it is placed on (unless it is't attached to anything, in which case it'll be a small solid gold square). When powered it would light up like red-stone.
-Gold wire would be able to directly connect to red-stone dust. Perhaps a little black square would appear at the site of connection, implying a converter?
-Gold wire would conduct power either an infinite or drastically increased distance in comparison to red-stone dust (which transmits power a distance of only 15 blocks). This would make it useful for when you want to use one clock to pace several devices over a rather large area. Or transmit a signal across large sections of the map.
-Gold wire would only be able to power three items at a time, counting the block it is placed on. By items I mean other gold wire or blocks beside the gold wire. It would connect in order of placement. For instance if you place one gold wire on a flat surface, and then place an item to it's left, it would connect to that item, then if you pace another item to its right, it would connect to that as well. However if you then placed an item in-front of it, it would not connect. If placed in the center of 3 or more items it would not connect to any of them, in-till you specify which ones you want it to connect to. I'm not sure how that would be done (perhaps right clicking on the two items immediately afterwords?). This would also apply if you place it on a wall or ceiling.
Because of this it would be useful if you want to run two power lines next to each other without the signals getting crossed, allowing for more compact designs or for designs previously impossible.
-Placement rules would follow those of red-stone, EXCEPT gold wire would also be place-able on WALLS and CEILINGS. This would allow for easy power/signal transmission throughout various levels of a house/device/machine by simply running it along one column of blocks, without having to stagger blocks and red-stone torches, allowing for even more compact designs and efficient use of materials.
---------------------------------------------
By limiting gold wires ability to power multiple items, and to be powered by said items, it WOULD NOT and COULD NOT be a replacement for red-stone, but instead act as a supplement to it. It would be more useful for transmitting signals in confined spaces (by running it along the walls/ceilings) and across long distances than anything else, meaning that the bulk of the circuitry would still be made of red-stone.

crafting
Gold wire could be used for a variety of new items, for example...
-Powered *regular* torches,
Made by placing one torch on-top of one gold wire. This would create a torch that would function identically to a regular one, but could be turned on/off.
-Wireless power transmitters/receivers.
They would be made by placing one gold wire in the center, 1 iron above, 2 stone to the right, left, lower left and lower right, and one compass in the bottom middle. They could wirelessly transmit power for a distance of 30 blocks in every direction, and upon receiving it would power items around them. You could assign receivers and transmitters to different channels, meaning that multiple pairs could function within each others range without interference.
To be honest I had more ideas, but forgot them, i'll come up with some more as I think of/remember them

EDIT: Ok, I'm finished now.
If we just had a new ore called copper you wouldn't need gold. I don't like this idea because gold is much more rare than redstone, and when you destroy redstone you can get aroud 6 or so from one block. So really this is mostly just a waste of resources, unless I read this wrong.
Also, you can hardly make anything without redstone torches and repeaters, unless you make gold torches and wire repeaters. That is even more of a waste.

1)
Copper would be good as well. 1 gold ingot = 9 gold nuggets = 9 gold wire. I suppose that could be considered a waste of resources depending on how you value gold, especially considering that now you can use use those nuggets and an apple for the new golden apples. Upping the amount of wire given for each nugget would help with that, though.
2)It could be used to craft a variety of new, advanced technology, items. Although I suppose red-stone could be used instead. Red-stone repeaters would work with gold wire, the only thing red-stone that wouldn't work with the wire would be red-stone torches. This would allow you to run wires right next to torches without the torches affecting the signals carried by the wires. And if you wanted to have a torch power Gold wire, you can simply have it power red-stone, and then hook the wire to that.

I'm sure there's a good (probably lag related) reason why redstone doesn't do this already.

All in all valid arguments.
The way that redstone dust goes up the sides of blocks implies that redstone should be capable of doing this on its own.
Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
