Netherrack is just ugly and seems out of place in the regular world, but right now, it's the only block that keeps fire burning forever. We could fix this with Everburn blocks. They would look like, say, a double stone brick slab. But here's where the idea gets interesting.
Here's how you would craft it, with 'b' being a bucket of lava, 's' being a stone brick slab, and 'o' being empty:

You can dye these blocks. Dyeing them would make the lines glow the color of the dye. Here's how you would dye them with 'd' being the dye, and the block being 'e':

Dying will also determine the color of the fire on top of it. If the brick has been dyed purple, the fire would be purple.
I really like the idea of coloured fire. But maybe the block could spawn in the nether, and nerf the dye recipe to 1 or 2? Then it'd be a fairly late-mid game block, and you wouldn't have to use 8 lapis or 8 cocoa beans if you wanted 1 block of blue/brown fire.

Sorry, but I just noticed I had put no way to get it and made it craftable. And I don't think I'm going to change the crafting thing.
Maybe they fixed it or something, but I seem to recall it being possible to have any flammable block burn forever by surrounding it with non-flammable blocks before setting it on fire...

Why cant they just make it realistic? Hmm.. here is an idea.. 4 stick pieces makes a bundle of sticks. (an example)
You place the bundle of sticks where you want them and then you light them. The fire starts off somewhat big, and gets smaller over time. After lets say.. one day the fire burns out. You can then just put another bundle and light it. Also, before the fire dies out you can drop in two sticks to keep it alive. Now that is simple...

Well then the fun must have been pulled out of minecraft for you already. Are you telling me the hunger bar and the whole survival theme is not realistic? hm..

Are you telling me that monsters come out at night?
Are you telling me that we can make portals to Hell?

For purely decorative purposes, of course.

You need silk touch to get double stone brick slabs. Maybe make it require 8 regular ones?
But you can get them with the Silk Touch enchantment on a pickaxe.
But ok, I guess I'll change it....
It was logs. And they fixed it.

Because realism takes the fun out of games.
