Paint will let you recolor different blocks, but letting them still have the same texture and properties. For example, in SMP, you want to build a colorful sign out of wool blocks, but want to make sure no one comes and uses a :Flint and Steel: on it. Therefore, you could get some tougher material (ie: and iron block) and use paint on it, giving the sign a different texture and more durability. This would function on all blocks that have already been placed.
To craft a bucket of paint, you must take a bucket of milk, and place the dye of your choice on top of the milk, and viola! There's your paint.
There are two different approaches to applying paint. Here's the first one, which is a messy way of doing things:
If you right click on he ground with a paint bucket, it spills all over the ground and paints it this pattern:
The other way is more delicate and detailed:
For this one, you need a paintbrush which is made by placing a feather on top of two wooden sticks. Once right clicking on a single block, it will be painted with the bucket of paint in your inventory. (Paint buckets have durability and will run out of paint if used 9 times) If there is more than one bucket of paint in your hotbar, it will ask you which one you would like to use (unless of course they're the same color). You can repaint over blocks, and even paint with water if you're trying to remove paint!
Also, just for fun, you can make paint balls by placing the paint bucket below a slime ball in the crafting menu, and give you 9 paint balls. These can be thrown at friends or enemies to created a big blob a paint in their vision, preventing them from being able to see things clearly for a few moments. It will also dye the player's texture until they hop in some water(or lava, but I don't recommend it!) Paint balls will also paint a single block if you hit it.
So ummm... Yeah, that's it... It would be nice if you left a comment...
I like the idea of having a stone block that we could dye like we now dye wool. Maybe instead of "paint" we could mine a white block (such as marble) and be able to dye it just like the wool can now be dyed. That way we have a strong block that we can color and it won't burn up like the wool does. I would use color much more since the block would be strong like stone.
No, just no, it would create huge lag and you would know which block is which. And btw, if you have wool for you walls you can dye them different colours

The idea is to have other blocks be different colors, instead of just wool. So you wouldn't paint something purple, and every block painted purple would look exactly the same. Instead, you'd have "purple planks" or "purple stone". The original texture, but with a new color.
Perhaps making it a "stain" made of a bucket of water and dyes instead of "paint" would be a better term.

Exactly, that'll create too much mess for mojand and if you can colour wood planks or stone that would make wool useless besides for making beds
I had the same idea of paint, to recolour an object but keep its texture, but I do like the idea of having it in a bucket, but I think it should be made ten uses instead of nine. Its just a nice round number you know. when you paint a block it should paint every surface just so its not to tedious if you want to paint multiple sides of an object. Painting should only applicable to wooden and brick materials I think. I also don't like paintball idea.
