Dynamic Lightning; creates a light source that moves around with the player, creating light wherever they go (as long as they have the lantern out).
Light level of 14 (same as torch), and has a light radius of 16 (spawn radius of monsters; monsters can not spawn in your area of light, but watch out for when you leave that place!).
Can be fueled by Coal, Charcoal, or Lava. Coal and Charcoal fuel the Lantern for 2 minutes each, and the Lava fuels the Lantern for 10 minutes (bucket consumed).
Made up of 6 Gold Ingots (more usage for gold), 2 Glass (usage for glass for higher crafting), and 1 Furnace.
Lantern Explanation
Before anyone decides to step away from the crowd and say, "This has already been suggested, man.", I'd at least like to give my ideas and opinions on how Lanterns, which Notch stated that he had discontinued for the Halloween Update(which were changed to Glowstone, thus putting aside the ghastly idea of relighting torches).
But when I think Lantern, I think "miner's lantern, the one that lights up caves for mining".
One thing that people lack on these forums from me just poking around are keeping game mechanics in mind. This includes tremendous amounts of exaggeration (9 diamond blocks are needed to...) or just silly ideas (what if you could turn your hands into cotton candy, and the Spider's tried to eat my cotton candy...). HOPEFULLY, you see that I've put a bit of effort in not only making a suggestion, but also showing how it has advantages and disadvantages that can make the item keep the game in balance, but at the same time adding in a neat and useful feature.
The usage of this item would allow players to explore caves and dark areas without the usage of torches, but requiring resources such as charcoal, coal, or lava. The player would be able to maintain a light source to explore, but when it is put away, the light source is discontinued until the item is brought back out, more as for short-term lighting. There is no durability on this item, but it's way of logic is similar to a compass or clock; not to hard to make, but extremely useful, and usually re-crafted after a fateful incident of falling into lava due to it's helpful nature.
When the lantern is put away, the fuel "stops" and is not digested until it is put back out again. This makes it more efficient for when you insert things like stacks of coal to not find 8 coal gone in the 16 minutes you didn't even use your lantern.
Crafting Recipe:
A basic design that requires a compound item, the furnace. It also requires gold, a durability-wise useless material that has proven itself as being an aid to other items. The furnace contributes to a "fueling system", that works similar, to almost exactly like a furnace (stacking fuel included), making fuel into a useful purpose, from smelting objects, now to keeping a strong light.
EDIT: I've been told there's a "Dynamic Light Mod", and I've seen it and used it in action. I'd assume Mojang could whip something up like this. Enough to where they could at least create more light source capabilities.
I wouldn't like this at all, I'd love it!
Possibly a furnace in the center, string above it, gold ingots around the furnace, but not next to the string?
Lanterns should be added, but they should not require fuel. There's no point in wasting 1 coal every 2 minutes just to have moving light when you can place loads of torches instead.
1. Because for dynamic lighting to happen, a massive lighting code overhaul would be needed
2. Notch said he would not add lanterns, since the community preferred torches. Even with Jeb in charge now, I doubt his view on things is much different.

1.) Dynamic lighting was kind of a longshot, but I do think if Minecraft could "some how" get there, it'd be quite a showcase and awe, would it not? :smile.gif:
2.) I referenced this in the post; Notch's "lanterns" were replaced with "Glowstone", but he kind of led to the idea of torches of needing to be rekindled, but lanterns, a separate item, to last forever. I remember the community booing the idea of flint 'n' steelin' their old torches, but the lantern idea I'm suggesting is separate from Notch's torch and lantern ideas, being a portable utility item. Before you decide to trail off, read the whole thing and do some low-level reasoning in your head, please.

I fondly remember using this site a lot, but never thought that I'd utilize that feature. Thanks a bunch for your assistance! :smile.gif:

1. You mean like the time when they did a massive lighting code overhaul for pretty colours? I think if they can recode the lighting system for aesthetics, they can recode it to add something that's actually wanted by players and practical. Maybe they can even find the time to make the engine support different coloured light sources, and add in the multicoloured torches some of us have been wanting while they do it.
2. Jeb is in charge now, not Notch. You got that much right. Notch didn't do it because of what the community wanted, though. He did it because he didn't like how moving light sources looked. As for what you doubt or believe about the future of lighting in Minecraft, I'm sorry, Snowflake, but your opinion doesn't constitute a valid argument. Plenty of people have opinions, and they don't all have to agree with yours. Welcome to the real world.
Think of servers, If everyone was using them to light up caves at the same time, The host will be getting alot of stress.
I disagree.
Yes, because no game has ever managed the amazing feat of taking light with you before.
There are plenty of games out there more graphically demanding than Minecraft which allow players online to carry their own light sources. Some of them are even block games. Some of them are for console...and I doubt that very many people have a PC that is less powerful than their game console. At the very least, they had better not if they are running a server.
Could you please tell me the years of experience and coding expertise that makes you qualified to make such a bold and unsupported statement? Particularly in the face of a mod that by its very existence stands as demonstrable evidence to the contrary?
If it really couldn't be done due to technical limitations (which I doubt) you could make it so that right clicking planted your feet to the ground and lit up the torch. Once you're satisfied looking around you turn it off and regain the ability to move.
I don't like when people say things are impossible.
