There are just those times times when you're in the desert with no trees for miles. Annoying, isn't it? I thought into it, and decided to make a thread about ways to make Desert Survival... a little bit more possible...
One: New tools
Now, we all know about the "Punch Trees. Get Wood" stuff. We have a problem: No trees spawn in deserts. You NEED logs to make wood in Minecraft (Unless you spawned in an NPC village). Cacti tools are just a big no-no for your hands. Although it's a desert, water IS common... So how about this: A 75% chance a water pool would spawn with a tree next to it. The tree would be based around a palm tree in looks. It'd give off wood, of course, but it'd have a much brighter texture to go with it. It could be used the same way as wood and for the same crafting. Tools, Blocks, etc. The tools have the same power/durability of wooden ones, of course.
But then we encounter another problem. When most people begin a new world, they probably don't want to dig down TOO deep. Which brings us to our next type of tool: Sandstone. My friend had said it's over powered, but less sand and sandstone spawns in a world than normal stone. Sandstone tools have 10 less uses for stone (It's made from sand, not rock) and have the same power as stone tools. You can also make a Sandstone Furnace. It'd just have the name "Furnace", but'd have a texture to resemble Sandstone. Other Sandstone things (Dispensers, Pistons, etc.) could be made, and just have the different textures.
Two: A way to obtain seeds
We know there are people who live as a farmer in Minecraft. Dead Shrubs should have a 5% chance to drop Wheat Seeds. I mean, they're useless at the moment. They need SOME use...
Three: Make passive mobs spawn on sand
Simple, really. Just change limits of passive mobs (Cows, Sheep, Pigs, Chicken) to spawn on sand. Possibly change wolves to spawn on sand, too?
Well, just click the +1 circle if you like this, if you don't like it, just leave a comment saying what could be improved.
Tl;dr:
>Add trees to deserts
>Sandstone tools + furnaces, pistons, dispensers, etc.
>Passive mobs spawn on sand
>Dead Shrubs have chance of dropping seeds

I like the idea. But part of the feel of th deserts is their desolation. So, I'd suggest maybe adding some environmental effects to deserts, maybe sandstorms? Just trying to build on the concept. After all, it still is survival.
I respect your idea and I understand why you might like it, but as some other people said, it IS survival. If you are the kind of person that gets a seed they dont like (for you, the desert) and delete the world and make a new one, I'm OK with that. I personally do not do that, but I respect your idea.
I like your idea and i believe that desert biome and ocean biome needs a improvement (like i said before on a topic).
>Add trees to deserts
We really need trees on desert.
i love to explore the desert like i'm some kind of Archaeologist or something and i would love to expend more time on it.
Trees would help with that.
They could add trees that resembles a palm tree like Jellomob said.
Maybe they could add with this, coconuts!
>Sandstone tools + furnaces, pistons, dispensers, etc.
With the wood from the palm trees, i believe that it would not be necessary...
as long as you can make a shovel, dig trough the sand and get some cobblestone to create stone tools and after you find a cave, you can have lots of material to build.
But we could have some stuff made of sandstone...
i can't think in anything good for now (besides what we already have in-game)
>Passive mobs spawn on sand
Or... DESERT MOBS!
like scorpions, desert wolves and snakes.
would be awesome.

- make it look like a palm tree
- ??????
- survival!
I like it!

That could be our palm tree.
Sandstone stairs! People have been bring up that idea for a while, and it would make sense since we have sandstone slabs.
3 blocks down on a sea-level surface is "deep?"

Awesome, would be perfect and it fits on a desert and desert houses!
