Think of the gold in creative. It is smooth, and has no flaws. It is more modern.
If you dig into a vein of gold in real life(hypothetically), it would not be all shiny and smooth. I think the new gold texture is good for survival, and the old for creative.
Agreed, the new texture is crap, the old one was much better. Though the silver block does look good.
That's pretty much how I feel, the silver block works fine. The gold block possibly just looks dirty and is ugly tiled like the redbrick block. If the bottom half of the gold block wasn't so dark would probably look nice.
The current gold had a good idea behind it, but it just didn't turn out right; I like how it gets darker from the top to the bottom, but as it stands, the middle texture turns too dark and orange to be aesthetically pleasing gold.
I made these iron and gold textures after downloading Duke 2.0's Spelunky retexture, and I rather like them, even without the other spelunky textures.
Also, burnt orange is bleh. Anyone else think the old gold texture was better?
Sorry, that just bugs me.
Quality of output = Skill * Effort
Uhm, isn't it an iron or steel block? :ohmy.gif:
Btw. the old gold texture looked like a glass lamp to me.
It is iron, since you get it from iron ore.
Also, the new gold is just a bit weird. And Notch himself said he can't draw gold so that's why it looks bad.

Creative is supposed to be less realistic than Survival and the old gold block is unrealistic, so it works in creative.
