With the releace of 1.1, there is now a crafting recipe for a Golden Apple. and still the only way you can get apples are from naturally generated chests. Jeb should really add apple trees as a way to get apples, but i do think this should be limited in some way, so its not overpowered. planting a sapling of an apple tree would not be too good, because if you had a bone and 3 apple saplings on you, you would get alot of apples...

Apple Trees should be rare, just like an apple would be. id say mabey one in the senter of each non desert biome, or something along the lines of that. mabey apple biomes simaler to the mushroom biomes

By the way, seed has nothing to do with apples falling from a tree. Apples have a .5% (1/200) chance to fall from a broken/decaying leaf, regardless of seed.
