ok, i had this idea last night in a caffeine high.... i have no idea if its even very good... but... here it is:
Maybe an LOS with a limited sense of "smell" if you are out in the open they can "smell you" and can find you, but only if they have already seen you. They are attracted to the smell but not as strongly as they are attracted now. It can’t get through caves and such... maybe like... 2 blocks
If there is AIR connecting you and the mob, and it is not more than, say 100 tiles thick (made it up on spot, change will be needed) then you can be "smelled" by the mob. There should be a door block that blocks this scent, protecting you from mobs "smelling" you.
Each block has certain permeability to it, such as stone not allowing any scent, and ground allowing scent through 2 blocks or less.... (Again, made up number on spot)
LOS would work just like that, a line of sight. If they see you, (which has chance decrease over distance) they track you, until they cannot see OR smell you. (You could get into your hut they would go away, but that would also need work)
This could add a new dimension to the game, which is that places you HAVE been smell like you, which makes monster SLIGHTLY more attracted to that spot. It could also add items and skills that stop scent from showing up. This would also make monster more attracted to your base EVEN IF THEY CANT SEE OR SMELL YOU personally. This residual smell is more "potent" and ALL monster on the map smell it, however have a very small chance to actually go to it each, say millisecond (MORE made up numbers!) or each time blocks/monsters are updated.
