I thought of something when I was playing Skyrim last night. I don't want to drop spoilers, but at one point let's just say you capture a dragon. This dragon will give you access to one of the final areas, as it is not accessible by normal mortal means. (Hope I don't get any ragers about the hints I dropped)
I thought: What if the Dragon Egg served a similar purpose: You go to the End, get the Egg, and come back to the Overworld. Then, maybe you have to do something to incubate the egg (surround in lava to heat it, "feed" it Ender Pearls, maybe even make some of the weird tesseract-crystal things that heal the original Enderdragon and put them in a circle around it) and once it hatches, you can either battle it and kill it for yet ANOTHER huge load of XP, and maybe another egg. Or, you can weaken it, lure it into a trap and imprison it. Then, you can get it to fly you to... THE AETHER DUN DUN BUUUM! Whether the dimension you access is the old Sky Dimension as it was going to be before the End came along, or something else, I don't know. This suggestion is just for the method of transport to the Sky Dimension that isn't the stale old portal.

It wouldn't be as a pet, just a means of transportation. I have seen the suggestions that picture you hatching your egg, taming it, and flying off into the sunset with it, burning your now obsolete wolves to dust. No way. Not only would that be OP, but it would be a pain to code and put even more emphasis on the RPG feel of MC, which is not what many people want. The dragon is dangerous. It tries to kill you, and you capture it to force it to help you. No cuddly relationship between flying lizard and man, as said in the title "None of this Dragon Rider crap!" It's a way to fight the dragon again, and a way to get to the long talked about Aether.

If you could fly to the aether, it would have to be in the sky in the overworld all the time. And if blocks could be placed that high, you could just make a pole with a ladder to get to the aether, and such a method would let you mine out the bottom of the aether for valuables. Not good. Beats a portal, but I thought the sky dimension was going to be accessible via dreams.

Using a flying thing to teleport to the sky dimension?!
But, remember... You should use a 2 block high fence. Those things are pretty big.
