Has anyone ever felt that building a dirt house in the beginning of your new world just doesn't seem right? Sure for new players the rush of having mobs at night can keep you entertained, but for players that have been playing for a little while this is too easy.
A change (in my opinion) is in need. As we all know, in real life, stacking dirt up against an aggressive man trying to eat you, isn't going to do anything! So here is my suggestion, zombies can damage structures, as can spiders. What this could do, is add a scary feeling to the happy easy flow of the game. This would give players that urgent feeling of building a small shelter, and would really change the game in a good way.
Zombies and spiders, those mobs of which can damage your house, can only do so after a long period of time. So going to sleep while being attacked by a horde of zombies (more on that later) or a few spiders, will only increase your danger. After a whole night (about 5-10 minutes) zombies will have broken through 1-5 blocks depending on the resource.
Durability is key to surviving now, the order of durability (by general starting blocks) goes like this.
Dirt
Wood
Stone
Cobblestone
Other blocks could be put in these categories of durability. Example: Sand is as durable as dirt, etc, etc.
About the "zombie horde" I mentioned earlier. Yes, this is what I meant, a horde. Not a single zombie dry-humping your fort, but a full 5-6 zombies attacking your base. Spawning is now different, as I read in a different post about dens and such, I really liked that idea.
Having aggressive mobs in dens during the day, and attacking bases/players during night. This would even make mining all the more dangerous as you may encounter a den, filled with roughly 10 aggressive mobs at a time.
That's all I got for this one guys, please comment below with improvements/feelings about this topic, as I know I probably did miss important key parts in it. Thanks for reading.
Edit: This would only be implemented into the "Hardcore" gametype. However, I also think if this were to happen, hardcore should also not consist of a single life game. As that, in itself, is way to risky. Even the most skilled of players can accidently fall into a pit of lava, completely ruining the game for them.
mobs that ruin structures will never be implemented, too many people agree that having their structures torn down would be a bad, bad thing. There could be simply tougher mobs, better ai etc. And the AI is coming, at least.

Oh that completely brought up an idea I forgot, this would only be implemented in hardcore because you and I both know, hardcore, isn't hardcore...like...at all.

Killed my support. Not because you mentioned realism, but because you're choosing to only build tiny dirt structures to hide from things. Try finding a cave shelter instead of panicking and digging yourself into the earth and waiting for the night, or try building a wooden house, like a real house. You aren't supposed to be dying on the first night, so stop talking about how it's not hard enough. If everyone died the first night they were on, the game wouldn't be that fun, now would it?
Edit: Please don't go "hardcore only"
You still aren't supposed to die the first night on any difficulty level. Point still applies.
Hey man I read your write up as I do many posts and liked it, however I am only responding because eveyone was bashing your idea. I liked it, I think you got a great idea and people shouldn't respond only with "that will never happen". You weren't even asking if that would happen but were asking what people thought of your idea if it could happen.
Well I am very into it. I love the idea of a harder mode like you said hardcore where the zombies as they would in a movie form a mob and try to rip down your house to get you. Good job on this, I hope to see it lead somewhere with a mod.

Lol that was just a scenerio, I don't see why you're so negative with all my suggestions. You never think of how it could make it better..only worse.
Again, even with wood and stone, mobs will still try to get into your base. This isn't necessarily a done deal either, my friend. This is just a way for people to have to repair their houses. It doesn't in anyway, mean that it IS going to kill you. This addition will only kill oblivious players.
With the hardcore thing..I think that's fair to ask dude. It has nothing to do with the difficulty level, but with the actual gameplay. Does the hardcore mode really not suck in your opinion? I thought it was just a cheap rip-off to get people to stop complaining about not having one, yet it failed in attempting that too.
Edit: As you said "Try building a wooden house"..point still applies if the suggestion was added. It would only slow down the zombies.

[quote=Badgerz]You have to keep in mind that people are stupid.
[quote=Catelite]Just because you don't understand how something works, doesn't make it broken or pointless. >_<
