This will be a non-retrievable block that you may place down. You can right click it to cook food and food only. I mean seriously, who goes out to survive in the wilderness and builds a furnace instead of a campfire? :tongue.gif: This would give this game the survival feel when you first start out.
cool idea, i like it, the fire should last as long as one coal and 4 sticks, like sticks smelt .5 and coal does 6 i think, so it should last 8 or if you wanted to make it a bit better you could make it kinda like the real fireplace mod and have to set it on fire with a flint and steel, or a more advanced crafting recipe along with the simple one such as
something like that, you should make a mod like this or request a mod :smile.gif:
or maybe even something like this :smile.gif:
or maybe using food in the recipe so that when you make it the food is auto starting to cook
where = any type of uncooked food, anyway just a thought :smile.gif: also the different crafting recipes could stand for different times, stick = 0.5 coal = 6 or something like that so if you use 1 coal and 4 sticks you get 8 smelts/cooks but when you set the fire down it is already started the cooking/smelting with nothing in it, or if you use the food version it would be cooking the food. or if you use the flint and steel lighting the fire mechanic it would only start the countdown if when you light it.
p.s what i mean by already starting the count down is how a furnce GUI looks like
campfire would look like this when you open it after placing/lighting
When I read the title I thought: Put down some netherrack, set it on fire, ????, profit. Then I read the post. It's actually not that bad, though I wouldn't require coal for it.

If anyone wants to port/remake this, feel free to do that! Or don't. It's up to you, really.
The recipe shouldn't require coal as said above. When (realistically) starting out in the wilderness, only wood is necessary for a nice long-lasting fire.
To keep the fire going, you could take sticks (when held) and right click on the fire, each stick added to the fire could, in turn, increase the length of burning by 15-20 seconds.
It'd be a nice realistic touch, to actually be a little primitive in the beginning rather than starting off with a full fledged perfectly shaped furnace.
Another nice thing a camp-fire could do, is keep mobs at bay. Not forever, as that is unrealistic. Just for approximately 30 seconds to give a new player a good chance in their first night to build a small shelter.

It's been suggested way too many times, and I'll bet that there's a mod for that. Plus, I can just get a wood block and set it on fire.

To set the wood block on fire you need flint and steel. Flint is easy to find but steel requires first mining around a bit, then smelting the iron ore. Torches don't need to be lit first and could be used to light the fire (place a torch on the campfire block).

yea nice idea with the torch, did not think of that :smile.gif: +1
I think this would be a cool addition, but there are about a thousand other things that would be cooler. If Mojang is ever running out of things to add to Minecraft, this would be worth consideration.
