I believe a good way to make Enderman more scary is by having them stalk you, instead of attacking you when you look at them. When you turn around to see if they are there, they disappear. Also they should sort of attack you at times while they stalk you.
They can't enter your house, except on occasion. Maybe like on the night of an eclipse. They enter your house, smack you up, and then leave.
An Enderman like this would be difficult to kill. You would have to put some sort of water trap or something, but that would make them more terrifying then they are now.
they determine your house when u sleep in your bed. unless you sleep out in the open.
i totally forgot about the ender world when coming up with this idea. still needs thought
About the scary mobs being a nuisance, tahts tru and all, but its sometimes nice to have a challenege!
Not only are enderman already a challenge, but this would solely make enderman the boss. They mine as well delete the goddamned dragon.
The only reason I want enderman to stalk me is because it would save me the trouble of looking for them. They can't sneak behind you considering they make funky noises anyways.

I am appreciating the feedback btw, thanks
about them being boss, i can understand taht, with this idea making them very difficult to kill, but i had mentioned like maybe this sort of enderman can bring the challenge of creating new enderman mob grinders.
Though, like i said in the previous post, i forgot about the ender-world, and the challenges that would bring as well.
this suggestion of mine still has some idea making to go through. and if your wondering why i care, its just cuz i enjoy the game, and like new things to come to it
You know, I think they shouldn't stalk you to kill you, but maybe they might be curious and the player might attract them. I still think they should be more mysterious than scary. Have a person who started Minecraft and didn't look at wiki for help. They would be confused at why the Enderman isn't attacking. The 3-block height is intimidating, and the glowing eyes are cool. I say that Endermen should have the capability to pick up more objects.

What do you guys think? give some feedback.
"Hey, cool, a dragon! Oh, and 50 or so dangerous monsters that are going to be hitting me for large amounts of damage throughout the fight!"
Seriously, the End spawns over 80 Endermen in less than ten seconds.
