I agree that adding marble to Vanilla would be great (I don't really do mods, so it's my only chance). I like the idea of large, semi-rare veins deep underground, in white, black, green and red. I do have an idea: marble can only be mined with gold, since if you crack marble it's basically useless. That would make marble even more valuable while not making it too rare.
First: Crafting marble would be good, but I think it would be a bit weird to add chalk for the sole purpose of making marble. It could be made out of sandstone, but then you could only have one color, or you would dye it and it would basically be wool.
Second: I think it should be more common the deeper you go, of course, but I don't think it should be 10-20% of the blocks if you go down far enough. Instead, I think it should just have really big veins, like 64+ blocks, that are kind of rare, but not too rare.
Third: Yes, other types of marble would be good, like rosy, green, and brown. But not every single color, because that's just a little overboard.
Keep the great ideas coming!
Why is this overboard? In real life, marble comes in almost every colour imaginable. I think that making it a difficult to mine, dyeable stone (Maybe needing a + of dye to colour?) sounds just right, and gives it a gimmick that makes it stand out and seem useful, instead of just "Oh yay...another block to take up space in my chests/incinerate..." For that matter, Marble: The Dyable Stone just sounds like a great thread title. Also, it fills a niche. Want to make a quick or easy colouration/pixel art? Use wool. Want something guaranteed to last? Use marble. That said, I've also seen people ask for stone fence (like those little stone rails you see on buildings sometimes) and while I've never been sold on stone making it, I think marble rails would be great!
That looks nothing like marble at least to me :l . To me marble should look like crying obsidian but have the textures be whiteish and grayish.
I'm going to have to agree. The seamless doubleslab looks more like concrete than anything. Besides, I don't think you can really count something that you have to exploit a bug in the code to get...granted it is a cool bug.
I am totally for the marble idea. All of them actually. Marble in vanilla MC would be a great new addition and my best guess is that people would very much appreciate it.
Further going in on the subject, how about this;
What if marble was not just some mineable stone, but just dyed normal Stone? First you'd have to get Cobblestone, smelt it in a furnace, and then use a Dye on it. Seems costly enough for a semi-precious stone like Marble. It would really class things up.
So I was working on this really cool resource pack a while ago, but bad progress nonwithstanding, I think I found something much better... I'm probably gonna never release another custom Minecraft map.Until we meet again...
Usually when I see posts about stuff like limestone or graphite, I post a negative comment, then leave. But I love this suggestion!
I had the aether mod for three days before I missed jungles and new wood (that mod reverts back to like 1.0 or something) but I loved the marble pillars found on silver dungeons. There is also marble in like the technic pack or something that looks really nice. If you ever post this on GetSatisfaction, please include a recipie for marble pillars!
How about:
Marble would be white by default, and can be dyed.
It would be semi-common.
You could polish it to make it, well, shiny; for floors and whatnot.
There could be many different kinds of marble for pillars, so that there would be a lot of room for building.
Minecraft needs more building materials in general, I could care less if there were more blocks that were only for aesthetics.
I imagine marble would look like a white version of the smooth sandstone.

I definitely support the idea of marble having all 16 colors, like wool.
It should spawn in rare, large (~40 blocks?) veins all of one color.
It should be craftable into slabs, stairs, and bricks.
It should have the same durability as cobblestone.
As a decorative block, it should only need a Stone or better pickaxe.
Maybe marble should spawn in specific biomes, replacing stone (extreme hills, oceans and desserts maybe?). mining it with a regular pickaxe will give you regular cobblestone, but mining it with a gold or diamond pick could give you marble block, maybe? Dyeing a rock just sounds ridiculous so maybe it would only spawn in four types (dark, white, rosey, and grainy?)
putting two marble blocks on top of each other will give marble rods, maybe? You could possibly use these to make marble torches, fences, signs, fishing poles, arrows, and anything else sticks are use for. Stairs and slabs could of course be crafted but how about tiles? Basically they are crafted like pressure plates but rather than activate redstone when you step on them they just partially cover the block under them. I like the ornate marble ( similar to chiseled sandstone) so maybe smooth marble too witch is extra shiny? these could both be made into stairs, slabs, and tiles too, of course
Marble blocks would be amazing but I don't think it should be able to be crafted... sorry, just think it'd be a bit weird and just mining it would make it a lot more precious, which I think it should be.
Also I'm not a fan of too many colours, it would be adding a whole lot of new plainly decorative blocks :s I may even go as far as saying just white...
Marble should be implemented because I build white buildings and they look weird because its made of wool but if it was made with marble it would look much better
I think there should be a naturally spawning limestone block that can be found in seaside cliffs or on the beach about as common as clay and when smelted or put in the crafting table can be converted into marble.
This is a great idea. So great i started building a mod for it.
I have only been playing minecraft for a couple of months now, but while back, the resident evil movie was on TV.
The one with the HIVE base underneath Raccoon city, and accessible by an entrance through the arkley mansion.
Since then, i'm trying to build this into minecraft.
My hive is completed, and now i was going to rebuild the mansion, but saw that there were a lot of marble pillars needed.
So since i really wanted pillars, I started to learn how to add my own items to minecraft.
I was looking online for marble textures when I saw this post.
So for those who are interested, I made a mod that adds pillars to minecraft.
There are 3 pieces: a bottom piece, a top piece, and a center piece.
That way, you can make your pillars as high as you want, with a minimum of 2 pieces.
I added some ingame pictures below on how they look and how the are crafted.
Check it out, and let me know if you would like me to continue this mod and add for example chalk to the items.
That's awesome! I think (and this is just me, I haven't posted on this topic in a while...) that marble should be found naturally fairly commonly low down in rosy, green, and white (maybe a few other colors). In real life, it takes a diamond saw to cut marble without cracking it, so I think that while marble should be common, it should only be harvested with a diamond pick. If you want to add chalk to be crafted into marble as well, feel free. That mod looks cool, keep up the good work

Technically, Minecraft Obsidian already exhibits all the properties of real-world basalt...and ought to be renamed to such.

Would look great as a bench or something

yes with this kinda texture (more or less)
