Yes, you can make your own server for free and play for free but an official international server(this has been suggested but I think this would be the most solid way):
*You pay monthly to be an IMC server member.
*Would be an mmorpg because one can play different roles in the server's community
-GM(moderators)important tasks such as selling land(might have to be delegated to an economic chief)
-GS("police" to put out childish conflicts and ToS abuse)would relay names of people to GM for making a dome around spawn, hacking etc.(could also kick people from server)
-Services(player-made services in exchange for money)
*Could set up shops to sell items to others and use the money to buy land or supplies
*Would be SMP
Griefing? If you make enough money and protect your land it can't be griefed. You can, however, get killed outside of protected territory(anywhere outside of spawn+owned land) and your items can be stolen off your dead body.
Animals? You can purchase livestock from an economic chief and they spawn them for you. Livestock are normally expensive in real life so they would also be in the game. One can just kill skellies to get bonemeal and grow tall grass to make bread farms until they get sufficient money to buy livestock+protected land.
Chests/Furnace/Animal Protection? Pay money to an economic chief and you have the type command to protect a chest/furnace. Animals could only damaged by you in your protected land.
*wheat would not work on animals in others' protected land
Why should I go on this server? It costs money and I get to do the same things as a popular server?
Because this server is international, it is the magnifying glass of the population. The plug-ins would be updated with every update and you can expect people to always be on it. Most other games have international servers, why not benefit players in MC with one? It would also give Mojang more capital to further MC(if they want to).
What do you guys think of this version?
Edit:
-Once first server is at full capacity, another could be made.
-Multiple chat types so the likelihood of spam would decrease.
-If one were to spam the main chat, they would get warning from GS or get reported to GM.
-A name pops up in bottom right if you're in someone's protected land.
-Explain to me how it's not a fix. I did...
-It's not an mmo? Why can't it be one? They would make money and it would 'unite' more people(even if they didn't like each other). Just because it isn't. I don't know how to explain it properly, Minecraft is simply not an MMO.
-Spam? Deal with it the same way mmo's do. GS's give warnings then referal to ban if it's bad enough. They could even just kick them. Doesn't work. There are too many in the community that are spammers. You probably wouldn't be able to see who posted the spam in the first place, since the other messages would immediately cover it up.
-Thanks for pointing that out, I updated the op.
There would be a new server made if it was getting laggy. Filled with spammers and griefers? That's what GS's are for. Starting a new server isn't going to solve anything, it's just going to get laggier and laggier. You also seem to think that server space is infinite; it's not. Eventually, if this even had a chance of being added, it would get way too expensive to host so many servers with so many players with so much stuff on them.
Think about this. I'll use Maplestory as an example. On Maplestory, can you place anything? Can you alter the landscape (server side; everyone can see what you've done)? You can't. And you can't on any other MMO. Alterations to the landscape are usually (as in, maybe 2-3 things are server-side) strictly client side, and very small changes. That's to keep everything from moving at 1 FPS; it's too laggy to update server side huge changes (such as block placement and destruction) on a server as large as an MMO server. Think about it; you've got hundreds of people, literally hundreds. That means you're going to get hundreds of blocks destoryed and placed every second. Now, tell me that isn't laggy. I dare you.

Well, if one pays to be on a server, I'm sure they would be less inclined to be complete morons. I wish...you wish...oh how we all wish...some people buy (real money) items in Maplestory so everyone can hear them shout "GET FREE MESOS AT SPAMSITE(DOT)COM"
So you're saying a new server would collect the lag from the last server? I don't understand. No, even if there is a new server, both the old server and the new one will continue to collect lag.
Yes, you're right, many people doing things at once would be laggy. It might not be possible only because of that.
Way too expensive? People pay to play on these international servers. Still wont cover it given how many people play.
I think the main reason this isn't feasible is because it's coded in java. If it was coded in a more efficient programming language this might actually work.
Spammers would be kicked by GS's or get 1 day bans from gs, the GM's would be the only ones with power to perma-ban.
Even if you figured out how to stop griefers, good luck getting a server capable of handling around 700 people at a time. Imagine someone posts one chat message that is 5 kilobytes in size. the server sends that out to every client, totaling 3.5 megabytes per chat messages. Now hundreds of chat messages keep coming. then add the block placement. the server will have to upload and download gigabytes every half seconds. Chat will be so overloaded, it will be rendered useless. the server would need to be as powerful as 2 or 3 google servers to handle that many people. Last problem: imagine ur a noob. u just spawned, but no one notices ur new because the chat is overloaded. Then u begin to look for a place to build a house, but land is occupied for thousands of chunks. I want to see someone pay for this.

You are reading this. It is a waste of your time, yet you are still reading this. "I've seen this before", you are thinking, but you read it anyways. You start smiling about how I just described what you are thinking. Then I tell you I just wasted 30 seconds of your life. Then you read this again...

With chat they could make multiple chat types.
GS's would forward griefers/hackers to GM's so they can get banned(greifing unprotected land would be allowed because you didn't protect it)
That's no fix.
Minecraft is not an MMO.
Multiple chat types do nothing except change who sees the spam.
You can't tell the difference between protected and unprotected land. Neither can game managers.
It's all around a bad idea. It would be crowded, filled with spammers and griefers, and generally laggy.
