An item that can be used to rotate other blocks is what I'm suggesting here. Note that I have no idea on what the item would be called, how it would look or how it would be crafted. I'm just suggesting what it would be used for.
Basically, I would imagine that it would work as so:
You start by right clicking the block that you wish to rotate, the block will become highlighted (either the whole block could be highlighted or the outline of it would be). You would deselect a block by right clicking that block again, or by selecting a different block. The item would have no durability.
Next, you would use the "WASD" keys to rotate the block in different directions.
"W": Rotates the block up.
"S": Rotates the block down.
"A": Rotates the block to the left.
"D": Rotates the block to the right.
And of course, these key-bindings would be adjustable in the controls section
This would allow for more intricate building and map designs.
However, certain blocks that are bound together, like a double chest, would be unable to be rotated. If a cauldron has water in it, it will not be rotatable.

The statement below is true.
The statement above is false.
Blocks are the same on all sides except for texture.
ಠ_ಠ ***** please
You don't think I don't know that?
And not all blocks are the same on all sides. Besides, the only reason I added rotating blocks on the side was because if you were able to rotate them up and down then you might as well be able to rotate them to the sides as well.

I'd like to be able to flip blocks when placing, but I think an easier method would be to use a modifier-key when placing normally (for example, Shift-Right-Click to place upside-down).
