The Shadows would be a new mob that would only spawn AFTER the EnderDragon is defeated. This way, you have something new to look forward to. Here are the details:
The Shadows, they would be 3 blocks tall, the same as an Enderman. They would be completely black, no arms, no legs, only the body and two white eyes.
They would spawn during the night, same as any other hostile mob, except they would spawn half as frequently. However, the Shadows would not attack the player, but would still deal damage if the player were to come into contact with one. Additionally, while the Shadows are in their current state, the player would be unable to deal damage to it. So, what would the Shadows do? They would attack other hostile mobs. The Shadows would deal 10 hearts of damage to them, once killed, a new mob would spawn in the defeated creatures place. It would be the darker version of that mob. That mob is now possessed by the Shadow.
Shadow possessed mobs have twice as much health, and deal twice as much damage. The Possessed would be the new force that the player would have to reckon with in order to survive. How would you be able to tell if a mob were possessed? Well for one, the mob would be a darker shade of their original color, and the sound they make would echo.
All possessed mobs would also have a chance of inflicting the effect "Possession". If this happens, the mob that inflicted the effect would die, and the player would lose control of their movements for a certain amount of time. While the player would still have little control, the majority of it would be random. And at the same time, the player's vision would become hazy.
When day comes, any Shadows that have yet to possess a mob would simply despawn, no burning, no dieing, they would simply disappear.

This is basically almost like a vampire epidemic suggestion but with mobs. It's a whole different ball game. I generally dislike any mob-copies-character, possession or mob-control ideas but that's just me...
Hmm... I like the idea, but it still feels... Off. Not completely agreeable, but I'm not sure why.
How about the Shadow stays around after possessing a mob, but it would become open to attack? The possessed mob would follow the Shadow around, and defend it. The Shadow could wander, looking for more mobs to possess, creating a little gang. The gang of mobs would protect the Shadow, so you would have to dodge the other mobs or slay some, but keeping some alive so you can still attack the Shadow.
Another idea is that the Shadow cannot enter sources of light, meaning if you placed a torch at your feet, it would be unable to approach you and attack you. However, the possessed mobs could still approach. You could even trap the Shadow (now that I think of it, 'Shade' seems a better name) by creating a ring of torches, leaving it trapped until daylight. It'd add a little tactic instead of "poke mobs with Sword".
EDIT: If you place a torch with the Shadow within range, I guess it could take half a heart of damage per second while it's in the torchlight. It would quickly escape the light. If the Shadow was stuck in a ring of torches, but there weren't any dark spots for it to hide in, it would take damage a per usual, but it would flee through the torchlight and into shadow.
I had similar ideas to the torch thing, where torch light would be able to keep Shadows at bay.

Not necessarily, it's not like it's not like it spreads from Mob to Mob, once it possesses a mob it's stuck there until it dies. However I can understand where you're coming from.
