Wolves are wonderful companions, as they will protect you, and are extremely adorable. But wolves are also very dull, and do not do much. That is there should be human mercenaries in NPC villages, that can be hired!
Mercenaries have 10 hearts, like the player. They can be given armor and weapons/tools by pressing Q. Giving them food in the same way will heal them. You can right click them to bring a list of commands, such as standing still, following the player, or firing them. Each mercenary is unique in some way.
Knights
Knights are mercenaries that wield used iron swords and armor, for they defend the village at night. They can be paid with iron ingots, and they will repair their armor. From then on, you can go to a village blacksmith OR give them iron ingots to repair their armor.
Assassins
Assassins are unique mercenaries because they do not follow you. Instead, they are called upon by the player. When called, the assassins will appear and begin to attack and disorient the target by running fast enough to be at distance with it. They are very fast, but they are not found with any armor except boots of any material or durability. They, however, can be given armor.
Wizards/Mages
Wizards are found wearing robes depending on their power. They can be given various items to make them stronger. They can also be capable of enchanting items. Their robes change color when they increase level. A wizard at level V can heal the player, themselves, and the group of mercenaries. The levels below are listed, respectively.
I: Blue
II: Red
III Green
IV:Yellow
V: Orange:
VI:Purple:
VII:Pink
VIII:Brown
IX:White
X:Black
Archers
Archers are ranged mercenaries that are seen wearing a chestplate of any durability and material, and are the second ranged mercenary, other than wizards. When you attack a mob, they will begin to fire upon all hostiles that are nearby. Do not worry about CQB, for they will switch to a stone sword when mobs get too close.
Other Suggestions
Going to a village blacksmith to repair armor (KyoShinda).
Archers and Healers(Wizards now heal at level V) (fred451).
Visual indicator of health (Health bar above head?) (KyoShinda)
There would need to be an indicator of when their health is low(some visual indicator like the dog's tail) and they would have to say absolutely nothing. Why do I say that? In every game I've had a mercenary helping me they get annoying as eff. I think they should all be healed with food, iron ingots would feel burdensome even if iron is easy to get.

By talking, I mean that there would be text where the chat bar would be. I also said they will be healed with food. Iron repairs any armor they are wearing and doesn't affect their actual health directly.

Text in the chat bar would work.
For merc repair you could go to the village blacksmiths. Taa-dahhhh
