I'm not a fan of the new sleep mechanics in 1.0.0. There are two primary complaints I have:
1. You no longer need to be somewhere actually safe to sleep. If you place your bed and don't get the "you cannot rest now" message you will sleep safely through the night. It doesn't matter if you're in a well lit room, a cavern system, or even out in the open field. Your sleep will no longer be interrupted. I've noticed in posts about the new mechanic people seem to think those players who are unhappy with the change are whining because we have to kill mobs, but I think the fact that sleeping is now NEVER dangerous is worse. If you CAN sleep in your bed you will NOT be attacked during the night. I currently carry a bed in my inventory when I travel so whenever it becomes dusk I just plop it down and sleep. Before I would dig a cave or build a makeshift shelter, but that is no longer necessary.
2. Building a secure home is now mostly irrelevant to whether or not you can sleep. I had a home built into the side of a cliff before the 1.0.0 update. There is a cavern nearby where the groans of a zombie used to lull me to sleep. Now I can't sleep in that house unless I first tunnel into the cavern and kill all the mobs. It seems silly and inconsistent that I'm not safe in secure shelter, but I am safe in the open field as long as I plant my bed at dusk before the mobs spawn.
I recommend the following fix. Keep the world alive during sleep. If you plant your bed in an open field or a presently cleared but unlit dungeon, a mob might spawn, wander over, and start attacking. If you're particularly unlucky, it may be a creeper. If you build a secure and well-lit shelter, you will be safe.
TL;DR Version - New sleep mechanics are dumb. The world should just run while we sleep.
Nah... It allows more adventure... And monsters still spawn I believe even if you"re sleeping so that first part is wrong. It is just saying that you cant sleep while the monsters are close but they can still spawn.

Hey guys! Click on my pic to friend me, (+) my posts or just say WAS UP CYBER!!
FYI, You could safely sleep before 1.0 at dusk if you timed it right. In fact there was a glitch to were if you slept in a bed before monsters spawned, and you did so every night, monsters would never spawn on above ground land.

This is simply not true. If you can sleep in your bed (i.e. you don't get the message) you will be safe and morning will come. No monsters will spawn while you're sleeping. Of course, in SMP EVERYONE needs to be sleeping for the time change to occur, but the principle and mechanics are the same.
By the way, what does "It allows more adventure" even mean in the context of this message?
Off Topic: I can't seem to get this message to load if I click on it from the suggestions board, only if I browse to it from my profile. Anyone know why that would be?

Although I didn't know this, I suspected it after the change. My guess is the REAL change the update made is that monsters that would have jumped into your bed before now cause the "You cannot rest now..." message in addition to any monsters that are within a certain radius. Anyway, it seems like the intent of the message is that there is danger at night and in the dark and you need to be protected to sleep. The current mechanics of placing a bed at the right time feels like an exploit, while getting the warning in a secure, well-lit shelter seems like laziness.
