-- Okay, some (or maybe most, I don't know) people might think it would be stupid, but I really like this idea, which is the Exploding Furnace. All you do it place gunpowder where your fuel usually goes, along with the object(s) you're smelting. It pretty much instantly cooks all your food, smelts iron, etc, but the furnace explodes, leaving you a hole and 64 (assuming that's how many you out in) cooked pork chops, iron ingots, or whatever! It would most likely be a mod rather than an actual feature in the vanilla game, but I still think it is a fun idea.
EDIT: Okay, Thanks for the input! I guess instead of one gunpowder, it should be a minimum of 10, because in order for it too explode, it has to break through a lining of stone... And it makes it more balanced compared to TNT. Also, maybe the extra gunpowder means you can't just build an obsidian box to stow it away in?
The addition of this to the game would end badly because cooking 64 of whatever with only one gunpowder would make coal obsolete. Also it would make TNT useless for exploding furnaces would be cheaper and more productive. Its a somewhat good idea that would have to be toned down.
I do think putting Gunpowder in the furnace should have horrible consequences...
Perhaps putting a sum of gunpowder in a furnace would cause it to turn into a time bomb? When the gunpowder is fully cooked, the furnace acts as TNT and explodes.
-Edit: I agree with Asdf. This does make TNT too accessable, and would make griefing impossible to handle.

I didn't think about griefers... Well, since you currently can't smelt with gunpowder, then Bukkit (or the mod developer for this) can take the code that makes gunpowder unusable for smelting, and apply it to mutiplayer servers. Is that a good enough solution? Also, I was think that maybe instead of it just exploding, it would have a chance to explode, or could only smelt with gunpowder a few times before actually blowing up.
