I've always loved lore in games. I love games like Dwarf Fortress because of the huge history that you can learn about. Same goes with Skyrim; I've read most of the books in the game. The best part about lore, though, is that it's completely optional and has no impact on how well you will do in the game (unless there are certain special lores, read more to find out).
Minecraft, being a sandbox, open-world game, should have lore. I want to know who built the strongholds. I want to know why the villagers have long, drooping noses while you're more human-looking.
My idea is very simple, and it goes well with the planned feature of writing in books. Here's the basis of it:
All bookcases have one inventory slot that can hold a book, a note, or a map.
Bookcases that you find in NPC villages and strongholds have a certain chance of containing unique books. When a bookcase has a unique book, it has a sparkling particle effect. I would think that a bookcase that is generated would have a 1 in 10 chance of having a unique book.
Unique books would have pre-written-in text, like in Skyrim. There could be a few hundred preset books, possibly with excessive meme references in them. Examples include: "An Anatomical Study of Creepers", "The Adventures of Honeydew", "A Practical Guide to Woodcrafting", "Endermen and how to Avoid them", "An Adventurer's Journal", "Journey to the Land of Fungi", "The Dragons of Old", "The Hellish World Beneath Us", and "Redstone for Dummies".
I personally think it would be fun for the developers to hold a community-based lore-writing contest, in which the Minecraft community would write and vote on the best 200 or so books, and then the devs would put those books in as preset books. This would create a large variety of viewpoints on the legends surrounding the nether, the end, the strongholds, NPCs, etc.
Another thing I think would be cool is finding notes in some bookcases that describe hard-to-figure-out crafting recipes (cake, repeaters, enchantment table, etc). Maybe they would unlock new ones that you can't use until you find them.
Anyway, that's my idea. Tell me what you think about it, or propose cool ideas for books. Hell, if you want, you can write books yourself and post them here.

I don't think Minecraft should have any lore whatsoever; it ruins the mystery of finding the structures.
As for pre-written books, I think that it should be hints about secret traps in structures. For example, a newly generated boss structure for a Red Dragon has secret switches you have to trigger to open the boos room, and the answer can be found in a book somewhere else in the structure.

Lore would be a neat idea. It would be neat to explore a stronghold's library and find books that somewhat describe the people who built it, and the purpose of the stronghold. Perhaps with temple ruins there could be murals that depict the people's history. Mystery is good, but mystery without the posiblity of any answers would make the structure nothing more than just another feature in the landscape.

Don't you think that if the lore was vague enough it would /enhance/ the mystery? Like, a teaser that provides just enough info to provoke more questions.
Also, I love the idea of lore and pre-written books. Maybe there should be cookbooks, just for giggles?

Could work in some way, having a lore as something less explained and with lacking details for some mystery, but nothing like "The Adventures of Honeydew", please.
I would like a lore, i really want answers for chiseled sandstone looking like creepers, and a answer for the ender dragon could be nice, support!
Yeah I agree. I've personally imagined that the sandstone is because an ancient race of desert biome dwelling Minecraftian's once revered creepers as gods. As for the dragon, I've imagined that the End was once a massive expanse of Skylands, high above the sky, guarded by a fearsome Red Dragon. However, the dragon was corrupted, and became the Ender Dragon, wreaking havoc and destroying the Skylands, pulling the last remaining island deep into the Void, and transforming the surviving citizens into the Endermen. Now the Endermen steal blocks from the Overworld to create more endstone to expand the dragon's rule...

i can still see lots of "BOMB! CREPR EXPLODE! LOLOOLOOLOLOL" getting through the filter anyway, just really subtle stuff.
