Tipped Tools
So. I was browsing reddit.com and I saw an r/minecraft sub-reddit. There was a post for suggestions to Minecraft. I read through it and saw an idea for gold/iron/diamond tipped tools, among others, but this was one of the more interesting.
SWORDS
Now, tipped swords are crafted like regular swords, with the base materal in the middle and the tipped material at the top. For example, A Stone tipped sword could a have a wooden base for example. Using the pervious example, a stine tipped sword with a wooden base would have the durability of a wooden sword, but do the damage of a stone sword.
PICKAXES
Crafted same as a regular pickaxe. To have a stone tipped pickaxe with a base material of wood for example, you would put 2 cobblestone blocks on the edges and one wood in the middle. The pickaxe would have the same duarbility as wood with the mining speed and capabilities of a stone pickaxe.
AXES
Crafted like a regular Axe. To have a stone tipped axe with a base material of wood, change the block next to the middle stick to stone and leave the other 2 as wood. It would mine as a fast as a stone axe, but have the durability of a wooden axe.
Well, that's it for now, but I'll post more as I think of them.
I don't see a whole lot of use for this since a stone tool with wood durability? Who would want that? Not to mention that your ideas would add 75 new item IDs to the game.
The cost/benefit ratio of this concept needs some major work.
In a best case, the player would save 33% off of his build cost by using a weak core with a powerful tip. With this in mind; why would I want to waste my 2 precious diamonds for a meager 65 uses (wood quality) when I can find that third diamond with over 23 times as many uses? (diamond has 1531 uses)
The concept is novel, but it would work better as a cursory measure instead. Like breaking a diamond ore would yield 1 diamond and 0~2 diamond fragments. The diamond shards would be used for potions, improving armor durability, and augmenting the tips of your tools.
I could form the concept into a full featured suggestion later, but suffice to say that diamond ore would produce diamond fragments, iron ore would produce iron scrap, stone is self-sufficient for "shards", and wood would instead use sticks as shards of wood. Gold would, as guessed, produce gold scrap or, for the sake of comedy, pyrite which would be the gold shards.
Here's how the idea would form.
You would create the item as normal. Then you would add the item into the crafting grid with the <shard> on top of it.
Each shard would have specific behavior:
SWORD
Wood Shard (stick) - +32 durability
Stone Shard (stone) - +65 durability
Iron Shard (scrap) - +128 durability and +1/2 heart damage
Gold Shard (pyrite) - -10% durability and +2 heart damage
Diamond Shard (shard) - +256 durability
I don't see a whole lot of use for this since a stone tool with wood durability? Who would want that? Not to mention that your ideas would add 25 new item IDs to the game.
The wood being used to affect durability was just an example. Should this be used in Minecraft or have it become a mod, you would be able to use any item used to normally craft a pickaxe/sword/axe as a tip or base material. Not just wood and stone.

But if I am going to use 2 cobble and 1 wood, why don't I use another cobble for over double durability. In fact, the only time it would EVER be of use is iron tipped diamond and gold tipped, so why not just add those for only 18 more IDs, not 75 (sorry about saying 25 new item IDs last time, I meant to say 75).

Why does everyone think I don't have an avatar? Is there anyone who can see the one black pixel.
Please click the dragons, they need to grow. Also, my fully grown dragons can be found in my bio.

I don't know why people would use 2 cobble and one wood, but people do odd things sometimes.
How would this benefit the game? Yes, it could be more efficient, but it would add many more items, and it would just be worthless for a diamond pick with a wood tip, for example. I think we'll be fine with how it is. Nice idea though! :wink.gif:
Hey! Unless you play with a nomad style or play on peaceful, sooner or later you will need a hoe (or suicide). A hoe is my second favorite tool, following a sword and being followed by picks. So your statement is wrong, since I would have ran out of food long ago on my map, even though I used the seed gimmeabreak, if there were no hoes. Other than that, I like what you posted, but the tippings for armor shouldn't repair armor that much. Hey, I have a log and some armor. Turning the log into sticks, you would repair 80 durability. Same deal with the sword, sticks shouldn't repair that much, unless you need multiple.

If your survival depends directly off of a cursory non-valuable item, more power to you. I prefer a wooden bowl and mushrooms, meat, etc.

Unless you play nomad, you need wheat for animals for meat. It took me a long while to find both types of mushrooms on ANY save (except on skyblock, for obvious reasons). Apples aren't that reliable, nor are fish.

Stone Shard (stone) - +10% mine speed, +5 durability
Iron Shard (scrap) - +25% mine speed, +10 durability
Gold Shard (pyrite) - +250% mine speed, -50% durability (you read right)
Diamond Shard (shard) - +50% mine speed, +25 durability
HOE - No one uses a hoe.
ARMOR
Wood Shard (stick) - +10 durability
Stone Shard (stone) - +25 durability
Iron Shard (scrap) - +50 durability, 1/2 heart thorns damage
Gold Shard (pyrite) - sets max durability to 10, 2 heart thorns damage
Diamond Shard (shard) - +75 durability

I like the idea. But it makes it harder to find more of the ore you need and requires the player to do more mining.
How so? If it comes in greater abundance as a BONUS to what you already mine, it should require LESS mining to get what you want.

Cant tell if trolling...or just stupid
Funny... Same problem with your post.
Please remain on-topic. I don't ask that you be constructive, but at least attack the idea and not him.
