you could select the volume you wanted out of a limit set by notch. you could be given an x, y, and z option how big you wanted the block to be. i was thinking it might be a little easier to build certain things (thick walls, castles, things of that nature). when you would place the block, it would turn into more of the same blocks, just stacked to make a the block of your choice, so that notch wouldn't have to implement much except for different outlines for when you go to put the block down.
well im talking about implementing it into the client, of course.

no, you shouldnt be able to blace ONE massive block. you should be able to set the block size, and place MANY blocks at once. also, it should be op only. makes more since to me, imo.
the reason im doing it this way is so that if someone tries tunneling into the block, the whole entire block just doesnt dissapear. besides, i wouldn't want notch to have to code that much. another reason why i want it the way i have is because it still maintains the whole "adding and destroying by 1 block each" theme.
