My server has a lot of meeting halls and shops that are useless. It makes the Minecraft world too small when people can talk and even "whisper" across thousands of miles of wilderness to their friends. And server owners' announcements get washed away by constant chatter and spam.
I'm thinking there should be a vanilla option in server.properties to make it so talking cannot go infinitely far. /whisper would just make your speech radius 1 or 2 blocks so you can whisper to friends, the default distance could be around 50 blocks, and /yell could go maybe 200.
Why? To make the Minecraft world seem larger, to make the game more realistic without cheesy/stupid/badly-programmed plugins that few servers have, and to make meetings useful.
And in case you didn't catch on, I am aware that there is a plugin for this. I've only been on one server that had it, and it was poorly-made.
If your with a friend, who doesn't have a mic. You are mining and hes out collecting wood far away, how are you supposed to communicate
You meet up at your house, which you establish as a meeting place beforehand. It sounds really hard right now, but it's easier than real life without a cellphone. You could cheat by using AIM, but there are plenty of other ways to cheat in Minecraft and ruin the game for yourself.
There isn't really a point to this, other than making communication with other people 12 times as hard...
Edit: The person above me is correct and makes a better point than I do.
It's easier than real life without cellphones and stuff (even WITH cellphones in some cases). I just find it annoying when you go on a server and hear people talking about stuff that is happening thousands of miles away from you. It's like everyone has an infinite-range radio. Wandering into the wild is not dangerous at all since you can still talk to everyone and ask for coordinates easily.

He means while in the game.
See the following examples, assume all people are not within a 50X 20Y 50Z block radius of each other.
Example1:
Steve1: Hey Steve2! I just found diamonds!
Steve2: Awesome Steve1! Bring them up here and I'll put them in a locked chest!
Example2:
Steve1: Do you want the track to go left or right?
Steve2: Left, then when it hits City1 make it go right towards City2.
Example3:
ServerAdmin: Ok everyone, I need you all to build you base out of stone or wood or any product of these two. Otherwise it will look ugly.
Steve1: Can we use pistons?
ServerAdmin: If they are legit, yes.
Steve2: Can we build a mine from our house?
ServerAdmin: No, you have to use the community mine and branch off from there. Mark your path so you don't get lost!
I've wanted this, or a voice chat that changes other people's volume through your speakers depending on your distance from them and what blocks are between you. It would be tricky, but I'd love it.

I am meowing at my lung’s fullest. I would even argue that the echo that reverberates back to me is the voice of someone I know…
I think this would ruin part of minecraft. While it would make sense that in real life you can't scream across the land, minecraft is not real life, and I don't think any games have this "hearing range". One way it could ruin it, is if you just join a server, and you and a friend planned to team up, if they friend is over a measly 200 blocks away, you have no way of communication.
Remember that this would be an option, kinda like survival vs creative. There would be more servers with this than there are now as a result, but it wouldn't change the whole game.

I would assume there would be an option to turn it off.

How about adding it and a microphone? Idk how the microphone should be crafted, but if you are holding it in your hand, your chatting range should triple. Also, you should be able to scream for 250 blocks.

Why does everyone think I don't have an avatar? Is there anyone who can see the one black pixel.
