No, I'm not suggesting that this be between different servers, but the same server.
Say you wanted to trade items with another person, and they agree, but then once you drop your items they don't drop theirs. You've just lost your items.
But with a real trading system, you couldn't be scammed out of items like this. You would view their inventory and they would view yours. You would select what items you want from theirs and they would select what they want from yours. You would see both your inventory and theirs. Selected items would be highlighted. If both players are ok with the trade, they hit the trade button. If one person doesn't like what's being traded (Assuming that the trade isn't planned), they can simply hit the cancel button.
You should also be able to put items up for trade for certain items. If somebody is looking through the things up for trade (There would be list), and they saw a stack of 64 obsidian for a diamond pickaxe, and they had a diamond pickaxe, they could trade. They would get the obsidian and the other person would get the pickaxe, even if they weren't on the server at the same time.
What if their inventory was full?
Items up for trade remain in your inventory. You just can't use them. This would solve that problem.
Good Idea, A bit runescape-ish but eh.
Anyway, If their inventory was full, It should cancel the trade saying "Trade Failure: Inventory Full"
EDIT: Also, You should HAVE to be online to trade.

fatI've never actually played Runescape.
I've never really had the desire to either.
