We all know and love cobblestone tools, don't we? They have 132 uses, are easily produced, and are reasonably efficient.
It occurred to me once, as I was trying to make a pickaxe out of smoothstone, that it seemed odd that you could not do so. It would make sense that if you could slap cobblestone onto a stick, you could slap stone onto a stick.
My suggestion is simple. Make it possible to produce tools from smoothstone and give them a slightly improved durability. You would be trading some additional resources and time for tools that last a tad longer (and perhaps mine faster, but that's debatable). Rather than 132 uses, smoothstone tools would have 152. To differentiate cobble from stone, the current cobblestone tools would have their texture made to look slightly chipped and cracked, whilst the new smoothstone tools would get the current textures.
I've thought the same thing as well. I'd like to see it happen, even if it's just something like coal and charcoal where it's just a name or graphic change.
In regards to rarekwiebus's post, brick tools actually sound pretty bad ass.
Sorry but I don't think thats a good idea, It just wouldn't improve the game. This is like making tools out of bricks you know, bricks... Smooth stone should be for building, not for skilling or fighting, Sorry.
Agreed here, and also because it's simply an extra tier. It'd be the same if you invented an entire new ore to make a tool out of, basically it's stone tools + 1 durability. I'm only in support of new ores/tiers if they do something useful.

Actually, why not take this a step further? Why are you able to make tools out of cobblestone at all?
First off, stone is currently the only material that doesn't need to be processed before it can be used. Secondly...cobblestone. Lets break that down. What are cobble stones? They're small rocks, about the size of your hand, that are laid out to make roads. Now, I may not exactly be a "handyman", but it seems to me that making a large tool out of small rocks doesn't work. You would need a piece of stone large enough to carve and shape for that. So, make the stone tier use smooth stone instead of cobble. It makes more sense, is in keeping with what other tiers take to craft, and makes having wooden tools actually have a point for a little while.

Thoughts?
