Melting ice in the Nether is currently impossible, because bringing in water would make lava oceans easily traversible, but if fire in minecraft has taught us anything, it's that you just need to nerf it. If water in the Nether could only flow 3 meters like lava in the overworld, it would shrink the area of lava flow in an open, flat area by a factor of 4.5. The shorter flow distance could be explained by evaporation, and Jeb or Notch could probably just reverse the code that makes lava flow farther in the Nether. Does anyone else think that could work? Feel free to add your own ideas and suggestions.
There is no water in the nether to make fire becomes more of a threat.
What if water could only be brought in by melting ice, like you could do in the 1.9 pre-releases? If you have to wait for it to melt, you might as well just punch out the fire.
