Have you ever been standing at the edge of a deep, majestic ravine, wishing for a quicker and safer way to get to the oodles of diamonds that surely wait below? Me too! I present ropes and stakes.
Since my forum-fu is lacking, I can't make a custom crafting chart, so I'll just describe the crafting myself. A single length of rope would be crafted using three strings in a vertical column, and would be just one block long. A stake would be crafted using two sticks, also vertical.
To use a rope to get down a cliff, first place the stake in the ground at the top of the cliff by right-clicking. Then you attach the rope to the stake - also by right-clicking. With one length of rope on, left-click it to make it turn 90 degrees until it's facing into the ravine, and then with more rope equipped, right-click on the stake again and again to make the rope extend. With enough rope you can extend it all the way into the bottom of the ravine, and then just shimmy down the rope to safety.
Sound good to anyone else? Sure, there's also digging yourself a stairway in the side of the ravine, but that takes really long!
Other potential uses
You can place rope on the ground kind of like redstone wiring to leave a trail. It's easy sometimes to get lost in mines, so leaving a trail of rope back to the exit could be very useful for the navigationally challenged.
Use a rope and stake to restrain tame wolves to one area. Why do this when you can just have them sit? ...Well, admittedly not entirely useful, but some wolf owners feel really cruel just having them sit all day. On a tether they could at least walk around, especially if it was long. See, I have to be careful with my wolves outside because of monsters and because of an artic-biome greenhouse setup using burning Netherrack. For me, at least, I'd feel a bit safer for my wolves.
It was mentioned that someone (I can't recall if it was Notch or Jeb) wanted to possibly add some physics from the zipline mod (or so I've heard)
Which, might logically mean rope.

Ziplines? ... Okay, I thought using ropes to climb up and down stuff would be fun, but you've multiplied the fun potential by ten. Now I'm imagining a long rope attached to two stakes on the peaks of two mountains and you flying down the rope. Wouldn't that be a fun way to commute! Or you could use a cable car, and maybe there could be redstone-powered rope that could take it up a mountain... Man, I love these forums.

I would like to see a good rope/tether for one other purpose—a safety line, for working up high.
