*disclaimer* I used the search function, and I found suggestions about safes before. But none of them really went into making it balanced in SMP. So I made this post, after thinking about it.
I suggest, a block that we can craft called a "Safe", which would be used for storing valuables, mainly in SMP.
I also suggest a "safe destroyer" item that can be crafted
I also suggest that you can make some sort of item that makes your safe breaking efforts work better, like a "primer" or something (name is not official)
I also suggest a "safe cracker" item that can be crafted.
I also suggest that you can customize safe "cracking manuals" (craft books?), that allow your safe cracker to work exactly how you want it.
These last two items are to prevent automation hacks from being used/ needed.
The purpose of this post is not to suggest or debate how a Safe would be crafted, but how it would be used ingame. Not here to suggest or debate how it would look, that could be customized with a texture pack. I'm also not suggesting/ debating how the password would work, it could use numbers, icons, or turning a lock, or something else. I'm also not suggesting/ debating what the size of the safe should be. Nor am I suggesting/ debating how a safe cracker or manual should be crafted or look. To understand how it works, I'll explain it as if you walked up to it in-game.
You walk up to a new block. It looks like a safe. You want to open it. You mine it with your strongest pick.
-It cannot be mined
You try blowing it up using TNT.
-It cannot be exploded
You decide to right click. You are met with 3 options.
Enter Password
You are asked to deposit one diamond. Once you place a diamond, you are allowed to try the combination one time. The combination can be a number/ icon combination, or a turning combination, or something like that. Once you enter your "guess", you click a button. Your diamond is swallowed up, and you have to wait a short while for a bar to finish (like waiting for something to smelt, but faster). If you entered the password wrong, you are denied and your diamond goes into the safe. If you entered correctly, you gain access and can take/ place things into the safe. You can take your diamond back, and any other diamonds that were put into the safe in a failed attempt. You can keep trying to guess this way until you run out of diamonds, give up, or guess right. If there is no room in the safe anymore, any deposited diamonds are destroyed.
Hack
Here, you can use your "safe cracker", as well as your cracking manuals, to automated the process of guessing a code. The cracking manual would basically tell your safe cracker which passwords to try first.
So, once you click the hack button, you have to place your safe cracker in one slot. In the second slot you place your cracking manual, and in the third slot you place as many diamonds as you want. The safe cracker will then begin to guess passwords to the safe either randomly or in the order that you specify in your cracking manual. At this point, you can walk away and do something else. Ingame, the "Safe" block would look different now, you could see some safe cracker attached to it and turning. A light would be red if it is still locked, or green if the safe cracker has opened it for you. You can keep feeding it diamonds if you want. It will do the guessing process slightly faster than at optimal manual speed.
But, there is a risk! If you leave your safe cracker unattended, anyone can come up to it and right click, to steal all your diamonds and safe cracker.
The main purpose of this item is to prevent the guessing process from being manual. If it was, hackers would find a way to automate it in SMP, and just AFK for a long time until it is cracked. This way, these type of hacks and macros are made impractical, and the player can continue to play and do other things. Having "cracking manuals" means people can customize their approaches to cracking safes. This allows players to have unique approaches, thus not making any benefit for hackers who would try to use a macro.
Brute Force
Here, you can try to destroy the safe to get at its contents. You would use gunpowder and diamonds to damage the safe. This would be faster than cracking it, but your diamonds would be destroyed. Basically, a menu would appear, showing you the health of the safe, and how many detonations it would take to break through. You would then have three slots, one for the "primer", one for gunpowder and one for diamonds. You could click a button, and a small "boom" would be heard. It would take time to "cool down", before you can do your next explosion. The amount of damage done would depend on which primer you use.
Once again, you could chose to instead automate the process using a "safe destroyer", which would automatically use gunpowder and diamonds to do small explosions, breaking apart the safe while you do something else in the game. The same risks of a thief taking your tools and supplies apply.
If you succeed in destroying the safe, you could access it. But the diamonds and gunpowder that you used would be lost forever. Also the safe would now become a "broken safe", and could never be locked again. It can now be mined with regular pick
Ok, now we will look from the other side. Lets imagine that we crafted a safe. We could now put it on the ground, and it would sit as an "unlocked safe". If you right click on it (or if you successfully guess or crack a safe). You could access the contents of the safe. You could also see the HP and complexity of your safe, and you would get these options... Upgrade/ Fix Safe HP
Basically, you could invest diamonds into your safe to raise its HP. One diamond raises the maximum HP by one, or repairs 2 HP.
Upgrade Safe Complexity
Basically, you could invest diamonds and gold into your safe, to increase the complexity of the password. The amount of diamonds required to increase the complexity would be proportional to the amount of guesses required to break in. I'm sure Mojang could work out a nice balance
Change Safe Password
You could change the password for your safe, but this would cost gold. This is because "gold" traditionally serves as gears(clocks), and since you are changing the hardware of your safe, you need to replace these. How much it costs would depend on the complexity of the password
Lock Safe
You would click this button to lock the safe
Ok, I hope you have a better understanding of how I envision the safe to work. Here are a few more notes.
-an open safe would remain open until you lock it. That means someone can sneak up on you and kill you, and have access to your safe. Open and closed safes would look different ingame.
-you can only lock a safe once you "invest" a diamond into the safe's complexity.
-only open/ destroyed safes can be destroyed using a pick/ TNT
-closed safes can not be destroyed by picks or TNT, but they can be pushed using pistons
And so, that is it for my ideas. I ask you guys to discuss and elaborate the other ideas. Generally, what do you think of a safe? Do you want one? How do you think it should look? Should it be able to be picked up? What is a nice balance for HP and complexity? How should the password system work? How should these new items be crafted? How much room should a safe have? What should a broken safe be used for? Please discuss!
If people can break it open why would that even be needed. You are now just making people waste their own supplies to really make a chest look like it is actually locked.
Despite its flaws, this is the best safe idea yet. It makes it like the old obsidian: hard to break, but possible. There should, however, be an admin command to destroy blocks in one punch, especially if griefers got this. We also need a crafting recipe. I will suggest this:

Breaking it open takes time. It is only reasonable that the safe is breakable in some way. If people invested their valuables to make their safes stronger, it would not be a waste of their supplies. It would discourage a thief from breaking it because if a thief breaks in, they waste their own diamonds (more HP means more diamonds wasted by a thief), and they can't take the chest to keep for themselves. If a thief cracks it/ guesses the password instead, the thief gets back all the diamonds he used to guess, and can keep the safe for himself.
Is there anything stopping you from griefing someone by filling their house with these?
Well, crafting it would cost valuable materials. Also, it would cost a diamond to make it "lockable". In a vanilla server, it would just be impractical to waste your valuable resources only to put something in someone elses home. If you put it in my home, I would have all the time in the world to hack into it, and take the diamonds you invested into making it.

The ingots should be blocks.
Thanks for the support. Yes I agree admins should be able to destroy it. Personally, I think crafting it should also require obsidian, since it is very strong.
Then where would the stack go, if it is full though?
It would force more diamonds into the stacks until you got back in. Only, the diamond would have to be destroyed if there are no diamonds in the chest and the chest is full.

Aren't diamonds what most people would be using a safe to protect anyway? You're forcing people to carry diamonds on them in order to get into the box they should be keeping the diamonds in in the first place.
Or if you do keep your diamonds in a chest so you can open your safe, anybody can just come in and take them, which is probably what a thief would be after anyway.
And if they decide to keep their diamonds in a safe to keep them safe from theft, then they would need another diamond to get into their diamond safe to get diamonds to open their other safes.
This idea either doesn't protect diamonds at all or keeps them locked away until the player can find more diamonds in a mine.

Yes, diamonds are what most people would use a safe to protect. And yes, I see how you notice the issue of needing a diamond to get to your diamond.
I think this is just a necessary evil to using safes. If you want a safe to be strong, you have to be willing to invest in improving it using something valuable. Also, safes are not meant to be used casually like chests are. Yes, I see where it may become annoying to need a diamond to open your safe. But look on the benefits that this causes. It means any thief who wants access to your safe has to be willing to take a big risk (bring enough diamonds to hack/ break through), has to have time to get through the safe. If you catch a thief, there is a high chance you will be rewarded! If a thief fails to crack it, because you invested in its security, you get the diamonds he deposited in there. If a thief is willing to try to smash his way in using diamonds and gunpowder, he is doing it at a large cost and risk to himself. He needs to bring X diamonds, then sacrifice them, just to get access to the safe. It might be a dummy safe with nothing in it at all.
Just like in real life, if you want a safe with greater resistance to a thief; one that takes longer/ better materials to smash, you will have to pay more money. A thief in real life needs to bring all his safe smashing/ cracking supplies with him, and there may be nothing in it worth the trip. In real life it takes time to get into a safe; more time for more expensive safes.
I think this type of increased risk to a thief really helps to balance the use of a safe. Your needing a diamond to enter the password to get in is a minor inconvenience.
Awesome idea, but I have a suggestion for a safer safe.
8 Diamonds
1 redstone
This allows you to add a teleport safety , the top 10 items (Chosen by you) will be teleported to a safespot when the safe is broken, and you will be notified that a safe with a code is put on your designated safe spot.

I don't think teleporting items should be a part of it. Totally unbalanced.
I'm not sure about this. It seems pretty modern for Minecraft, but with some tweaks it would work. I don't like the idea of wasting diamonds to crack it, maybe instead you could use gold, or some other thing. Diamonds are just too rare.
With diamonds that you need more diamonds to get to.
what? No.
If you catch a thief, he is either...
