I was reading up on transistor history and Minecraft has so utterly swallowed my soul that I was thinking of ways it could be incorporated into the game.
I propose that selenium flakes be refined from gravel by smelting. It's not exactly geologically accurate, but w/e.
And what would you do with selenium flakes? By some recipe involving redstone and maybe glass you could make a portable light detector. This would be a handy device that checks the light levels of a given surface. This would be very helpful for mushroom farmers and the incurably paranoid who had a creeper spawn in their base once and are getting tired of putting torches up ever square meter of wall.
Put nine selenium flakes together and make a selenium block. This would be a block with modest structural properties and the unique property that when >7 light is shining on it it acts as a redstone power source, like a torch.
So, it would give gravel an additional use, and make reliable light detection possible both for the player and on an automated basis.
What say you?
If any modders like the idea, feel free to use it.
I dunno. Kudos on doing some research, but I don't think real transistors fit well into redstone.
Might I suggest new uses for redstone to make those devices? A light-meter would be nice, and a crafting recipe involving redstone and glowdust would be fairly simple to come up with. A light sensor block could then be crafted from this device.
I would like to see more craftable circuit components like the repeater/diodes. Some basic logic gates like AND gates (that essentially behave like transistors, though with normalized output). Adjustable clocks would be nice also. I have seen a mod that does this very well.

The Internet is a big place, friend. I've been places you've n͍̺e̩v̦e̦̰͍͓̩ͅr̜̭̝̬̬͉̤̬ ͙ịm̖͇a͍͇̤͙̥g̤̘i͔͖̤̼̪̬n͖͔̳̬̯e̩̘ḓ͈͔̠̙͇̼̯.͎
This is good, a device showing the light level.. not so bad, I support.
Also I want more redstone items as well (referring to a post above mine):
Pulse blocks. When current applied (Ie redstone) it pulses one time and then no more (Ie turns off). VERY USEFUL for piston projects. I can make a pulse circuit but I need too much space :sad.gif: )
I also want:
pulsing block. When current applied, it pulses (set-able like repeaters are) steadily. Pulse blocks can replace the pulse circuits you have to create for say piston-operated cobble makers.
Again I KNOW how to make these, I just want them more compact in the components.
Sounds good, the mojang dev team should make a 'redstone enhancement' update for this - it doesnt take away from the game at all and only adds to functionality of the rs mechanic
I would actually love a redstone power source that would output a signal with a strength (length) equal to the light level of the block. A level of 15 (daylight) would send a signal the full 15 blocks like all other power sources.
I don't think such a block would need any more items (besides itself) added to the game though. Just glass panes, obsidian, redstone, and maybe some glowstone dust.
My reasoning with this was that I wanted something that would make gravel more useful and something that would mesh with the existing game mechanics. The redstone circuit elements we have are very simple, but that hasn't stopped people from making logic gates out of them. A circuit element that switches based on light level doesn't immediately sound useful, but give it a day or two and see what the redstone wizards here would figure out to do with it!

Once more, to the original request, I support.

To read the haiku that you
Just finished reading
I can think of all sorts of uses already!
They people who build those massive redstone CPUs might do something brilliant. A light-based CPU? Brilliant!
