Recently I was playing around in Creative and before I noticed what I was doing I'd grown a large cluster of giant red mushroom. And I thought, "Hey look at that, it's sort of like a bell." Then I played around by adding some wool flooring to it, and a ladder to climb inside and another thought occurred to me, "What if Mushroom Islands were inhabited by little 1-block-high Mushroom tribesmen?" They could be cow worshipers, and herd them and harvest the mushrooms from them as sustenance (cannibalism?). They could also be mystics who mine for redstone and lay down intricate--but essentially nonfunctional--redstone dust lines all over their island. Naturally, they would use redstone torches in lieu of actual torches both because of their fascination with the mineral and also because using a flaming torch would likely burn their mushroom homes down.
EDIT: Also, disturbing their redstone lines or killing a Mooshroom will make them dislike you. They may not attack you right off the bat, they could just avoid you, hide in their homes and curse your name. But if you continue messing with the things they love they will gather and bombard you.
What do you think? Some might argue that it would make redstone too easily accessible but I'll counter-argue by saying that Mushroom Islands are relatively rare and redstone is for the most part pretty abundant elsewhere.
That seems pretty cool and hopefully they wouldn't make those AI's as derpy as the villagers. And no it would not be cannibalism, because cannibalism is the eating of one's own species.
