I think that experience points is a wrong name given to this concept in Minecraft. It aren't XP points at all, it is a resource that you use to enchant tools and weapons.
Experience levels is normally something that determines stats, and you don't lose unless it's a game which penalties this on death. Also, you get experience levels for slaying monsters yourself, not for others slaying it.
In Minecraft, everyone can pick up the XP orbs, and you use them as a resource instead.
So I think soul points, or something similar like that, would be a better name for this. Like, you enchant the tools and weapons using the soul points from your slain foes.
They are XP points. Mana points would be better, but essentially XP points help you level up your weapons to become a better fighter. So yeah, it is XP.
But normally more experience means you get better. In this game, however, you lose your experience when you use it. In real life (and RPG games), experience is kept, since it makes no sense to lose experience by doing something, experience can only be gained by doing stuff (experience is what you learned in the past, the past can't be changed).
Yes, but that doesn't mean that it should use words for something different than the word means. My suggestion is only a name change, the mechanic remains exactly the same and is fine imho.

In Dungeons in Dragons, you can use up your XP to cast certain powerful spells. They're also used for creating magic items.
Methinks that's what's going on here.

yeah NORMALLY!
Yes, I did, that's what I meant. Experience LEVELS normally are to give you stats. Here the levels are used as a resource instead.
XP orbs could be soul orbs, XP levels could be soul points. Or soul levels.

You can't use magic in this game -.-
Eh, I think they're Nifty Green Orbs.
Then enchanting is...?

It isn't. Therefore you can call it whatever you want.
